ALGIERS- During his attendance at the 44th ordinary session of the African Union Executive Council in Addis Ababa, Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf spoke on the mechanisms for African Union participation in the G20.

According to a statement from the ministry, Attaf emphasized the significance of integrating the African Union into the G20, calling it “an achievement to be valued and a development upon which to build our collective journey to address historical injustice and the marginalization of our continent in various global governance institutions, including political, security, economic, and social domains.”

In this context, Attaf continued, “our delegation calls for ensuring the effective participation of the African Union in this bloc and working within this framework to mobilize the necessary international support to achieve the goals and aspirations outlined in our 2063 development agenda.”

Attaf then clarified that the approach presented to the Executive Council regarding participation mechanisms in the G20 is inspired by Resolution No. 845 of the Conference of Heads of State and Government.

The approach revolves around two essential points: firstly, that the rotating president of the Union, supported by the Commission president, will represent the organization at G20 summit meetings, and secondly, to extend the same principle to ministerial meetings, where a minister from the presidency, supported by the relevant commissioner, represents the organization.

“This working method is, in our view, the most effective, efficient, and capable of ensuring our continent’s voice is heard securely, honestly, and faithfully,” he asserted.

Attaf’s remarks underscore Algeria’s commitment to advancing Africa’s interests on the global stage and ensuring meaningful participation in key international forums such as the G20. The proposed mechanisms aim to amplify African voices and perspectives in addressing global challenges and shaping the future of international governance.
