Algerian Forces Thwart Transnational Cocaine Smuggling Network Orchestrated by Moroccan Ringleader

ALGIERS- In a significant crackdown on transnational organized crime, Algerian security forces, specifically the National Gendarmerie regional unit in El Oued, have successfully dismantled an international drug trafficking network responsible for smuggling cocaine into Algeria. The operation targeted two European countries where the illicit substance was sourced and transported by two major barons, with the head of the network revealed to be a Moroccan national.

The investigation uncovered that the network’s primary objective was to bring cocaine into Algeria through coastal cities, with subsequent distribution channels extending to various inland regions. The mastermind behind the operation, based in Morocco, orchestrated the shipment of the illicit substance to the coastal cities in Algeria. Once the cocaine arrived in the province of El Oued, the network leader, known as the primary baron, facilitated the reception and subsequent trafficking of the narcotics within Algerian territories. Notably, the investigation revealed that the traffickers traded significant quantities of ecstasy tablets, specifically the hallucinogenic drug Brigaline, in exchange for the cocaine.

The successful operation resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of narcotics, including 13 grams of cocaine, 20 grams of ecstasy powder, and 197 ecstasy tablets of various types. Additionally, law enforcement confiscated electronic scales, mobile phones, and a considerable sum of money amounting to 110 million Algerian centimes. The operation also led to the impoundment of four tourist vehicles believed to be associated with the drug trafficking activities.

The Gendarmerie’s dedicated efforts in dismantling this drug trafficking network showcase Algeria’s commitment to combatting transnational crime and safeguarding national security. The ongoing investigation seeks to apprehend all individuals involved in the network, with 17 suspects already in custody, while two others remain at large, believed to have fled the country.
