Algerian Government Accelerates Strategic Projects: Gara Djebilet Mining, Digital Connectivity, and Summer Transport at the Forefront

Algiers, Algeria | July 2nd, 2025 — In a cabinet session held on July 2nd, Algerian Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui presided over a government meeting largely dedicated to assessing the progress of flagship development projects aligned with the national strategic vision set forth by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

A central item on the agenda was the review of the ongoing development of the Gara Djebilet iron ore deposit, one of the largest untapped reserves in the world, and the associated 950-kilometer mining railway line connecting Béchar to Tindouf and the Gara Djebilet site. This megaproject is considered a strategic backbone for the rise of an integrated domestic iron and steel industry, marking a crucial step toward Algeria’s industrial sovereignty and economic diversification. The project reflects the Head of State’s ambition to capitalize on Algeria’s natural resource potential for long-term growth and industrial transformation.

The government also reviewed a comprehensive presentation on the expansion of electronic communications infrastructure across the national territory, an essential pillar for Algeria’s digital transformation. The measures under evaluation include the strengthening of national telecommunications networks, the protection of submarine cables, and the scaling up of national digital capacity to support modern, secure, and inclusive connectivity.

In anticipation of the upcoming university academic year, the cabinet examined a series of measures aimed at improving student services and overall campus management. The government reaffirmed its commitment to providing optimal conditions for students, focusing on the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of services in university residences, transport, and learning environments.

Another key focus was placed on enhancing maritime and air transport services during the peak summer season, with particular attention to Algerian expatriates returning home. The Prime Minister urged port and airport operators to uphold high service standards, reduce delays in administrative procedures and cargo handling, and ensure a warm and professional reception for travelers. The government emphasized the strict respect of travel schedules and reiterated its expectation that all stakeholders contribute to improving the quality of transport logistics during this critical seasonal period.
