Algerian Government Reviews Key Infrastructure, Livestock Imports, and National Youth Strategy

ALGIERS โ February 18, 2026 โ Algeriaโs government convened on Wednesday to deliberate a series of strategic files spanning transport infrastructure, agricultural supply chains, youth policy, and water security, reflecting an agenda anchored in both immediate socioeconomic priorities and long-term development planning.
Among the measures examined was a draft executive decree declaring public utility for the construction of an underpass on National Road 41 at the El Keria district in the commune of Chรฉraga. The project, authorities said, is designed to ease chronic congestion affecting Chรฉraga, Bouchaoui, and Aรฏn Benian, enhancing mobility in western Algiers and improving urban connectivity.
In the agricultural sector, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development briefed the cabinet on the ongoing operation to import one million sheep ahead of Eid al-Adha, following instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to stabilise livestock prices and protect household purchasing power. The ministry has concluded commercial and sanitary agreements aimed at securing supply chains and ensuring the safe transfer of livestock, a move intended to curb speculation and prevent market volatility during the religious holiday.
The Executive, meeting under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, also approved a proposal for a comprehensive national youth strategy aligned with the presidentโs directives. The plan integrates cross-sectoral policies focused on performance standards, vocational training, and the empowerment of young project leaders, with the goal of embedding youth participation at the heart of Algeriaโs sustainable development agenda.
Water infrastructure was another key item on the agenda. Ministers reviewed progress on the Sidi Khelifa Dam project in the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou, alongside updates on the Bouzina Dam in Batna, which has been operational for 18 months. The latter supplies water to mountainous regions of the Aurรจs and supports irrigation for orchards and cultivated land, reinforcing agricultural resilience in eastern Algeria.
