Algerian Government Takes Decisive Steps to Implement Presidential Directives: National Priorities Under Scrutiny

Larbaoui Chairs High-Level Meeting to Advance Social Equity, Water Security, Agricultural Self-Sufficiency, and Global Economic Integration

Algiers, Algeria | May 28th, 2025 — In a powerful reaffirmation of Algeria’s strategic direction under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui chaired a pivotal Government meeting on Wednesday, with a sharp focus on translating presidential instructions into concrete, multisectoral outcomes. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office, reflected the Government’s intensified commitment to upholding the social character of the State, fortifying national sovereignty, and advancing Algeria’s footprint in global markets.

 

According to an official statement issued by the Services of the Prime Minister, the session was devoted to examining five major dossiers: the productive family programme, vocational training, water security via desalination technology, the 2025 harvest campaign, and the international expansion of Algerian enterprises.

Targeted Economic Empowerment of Rural Women and Housewives

At the heart of the meeting was an in-depth discussion on the regulatory framework governing the productive family programme, a landmark initiative designed to grant direct financial and logistical support to rural women and housewives. This programme enables these categories—often underrepresented in formal economic structures—to engage in income-generating micro-activities, thus enhancing both their social standing and economic independence.

“The measure aligns with President Tebboune’s enduring commitment to preserving Algeria’s social fabric while ensuring inclusive development,” the communiqué stated. By facilitating access to micro-financing, training, and market linkage opportunities, this programme seeks to unlock the untapped productive potential of Algerian women, especially in remote and semi-urban areas.

Building a Workforce of the Future through Centers of Excellence

The Government also reviewed a strategic communication regarding the creation of vocational training centers of excellence. These institutions are intended to serve as flagships for high-quality, skill-based education, tailored to meet both current and emerging demands of the national and international job markets. The project represents a key pillar in Algeria’s broader vision of aligning human capital development with industrial and technological transformation, particularly in high-growth sectors.

Advancing Water Sovereignty through Local Desalination Technology

In a decisive move to bolster Algeria’s water independence, the Government examined a report on the domestic production of membranes for seawater desalination plants. This initiative constitutes a critical axis of the national water security policy, directly overseen by President Tebboune.

By investing in the local fabrication of these high-tech components, Algeria not only reduces its reliance on costly imports but also gains strategic control over supply chains in a domain vital to long-term environmental and agricultural stability. The approach is expected to significantly lower production costs and delivery timelines, all while enhancing Algeria’s R&D and industrial base.

2025 Harvest Campaign: Launch Begins in Southern Wilayas

Turning to food security, the Government reviewed initial progress in the 2025 harvest campaign, particularly within southern wilayas where operations have already commenced. Authorities detailed the extensive logistical and technical resources deployed to ensure successful grain collection, while also examining the ongoing preparations in the remaining wilayas.

This agricultural campaign is not only vital for domestic food self-sufficiency, but also a measure of Algeria’s ability to mitigate global supply shocks and climatic pressures. The Government’s proactive approach reflects a strategic commitment to boosting national grain yields and reducing dependency on imports.

Global Competitiveness: Enhancing Certification for Export Growth

In conclusion, the Government addressed a communication focused on improving the regulatory and operational frameworks for certification and accreditation. The discussion centered on enabling Algerian companies to comply with international standards, thereby improving the global acceptability and competitiveness of their products.

This forms part of a broader strategy to position Algeria as a serious player in international markets, where quality assurance is not just a requirement but a gateway to economic sovereignty. By strengthening certification mechanisms, the Government is facilitating new export channels, particularly in non-hydrocarbon sectors.
