Algerian Heroism at Sea: Sonatrach Crew Rescues Injured French Sailor Off Italian Coast

Algiers, Algeria– Wednesday, July 16, 2025 | In a compelling display of maritime professionalism and humanitarian valor, the Algerian-flagged vessel BAREGA II, operated by Hyproc Shipping Company, a subsidiary of the Sonatrach Group, successfully carried out a high-seas rescue operation off the coast of Fiumicino, Italy, on Monday. The incident involved the emergency rescue of a French national whose vessel had suffered critical failure amidst turbulent conditions in open waters.

According to a statement issued Tuesday by Sonatrach, the operation began when the BAREGA II crew, stationed in a standby position near Fiumicino port while awaiting the unloading of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cargo, intercepted a distress call from a French-flagged boat in imminent danger. Without hesitation, the crew initiated a rapid-response rescue operation in accordance with the SOLAS Convention (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea), to which Algeria is a signatory.

The BAREGA II’s crew managed to retrieve the injured sailor, who had suffered physical trauma due to a storm that struck the area. He was safely brought aboard and immediately administered first aid and essential medical treatment by the ship’s personnel, who were fully equipped to handle such emergencies.

In parallel with the rescue, the team successfully secured and towed the damaged vessel, ensuring it did not pose further navigational risks. Simultaneously, the crew coordinated with the Italian Coast Guard, informing them of the incident and facilitating the evacuation of the injured sailor. The damaged vessel remains on board the BAREGA II pending completion of official procedures and retrieval by relevant Italian authorities.

The rescued sailor, visibly moved by the professionalism and compassion of his rescuers, extended heartfelt thanks to the 30-member crew, which notably includes two women. He praised their swift intervention, warm hospitality, and the quality of care he received aboard the Algerian vessel, which likely saved his life.
