Algiers, Algeria | July 30th, 2024 — On Monday, a significant number of national media outlets in Algeria endorsed an ethical charter for self-regulation, in preparation for the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for September 7. The charter, crafted and proposed by the National Organization of Algerian Journalists (NOAJ), marks a pivotal step towards enhancing media integrity during the electoral period.

The signing ceremony was held at the Ministry of Communication, in conjunction with a professional seminar organized by NOAJ titled “Journalistic Practice During Elections: Ethical Commitments and Legal Standards.” NOAJ President Slimane Abdouche underscored the importance of the forthcoming elections for institutional development and the critical role of the media in this context.

Abdouche remarked, “The electoral process presents a substantial challenge for media outlets in performing their essential role of delivering objective and transparent information about the candidates’ platforms and viewpoints.” He emphasized that the charter aims to establish standards reflecting the esteemed tradition of Algerian journalism, ensuring alignment with constitutional and legal provisions governing media practices. He described the charter as a vital step in enhancing sector organization and supporting state efforts.

Impartiality and Objectivity Emphasized

Ahmed Brahim, head of the Exchanges and Content Department at the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU), addressed the expectations for media during election campaigns. He highlighted the need for impartial and balanced coverage, and the prohibition of accepting financial compensation or gifts in exchange for journalistic work.

Brahim also stressed the importance of respecting public freedoms and human rights, encouraging a culture of participatory democracy, and energizing civil society’s role. He reiterated the media’s responsibility to actively engage voters and promote participation in the September 7 elections.

Toward a “Free and Professional” Journalistic Practice

Karim Kandouli, correspondent for the international television channel El Ghad, emphasized that the charter provides a framework for “free and professional” journalism. “This charter is crucial in ensuring that the media upholds its role, especially as Algeria approaches the presidential elections where the press’s role is fundamental,” Kandouli stated.

Journalist Nassima Ben Ahmed highlighted the significance of the charter, noting that it empowers journalists to perform their duties with enhanced professionalism and ethical standards during the electoral event. She pointed out that Algeria’s international visibility necessitates a strong commitment from the media to support the successful conduct of the September 7 elections.
