Algerian Minister Arkab Engages in Talks with Chinese Steel Industry Giant Shanghai Delong Steel

ALGIERS- In a notable development, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, hosted a Chinese delegation led by Mr. Zhou Zhibang, the president of the CMH consortium, a key partner in the Gara Djebilet project. The delegation also included Mr. Kan Yonghai, the vice president of the renowned Shanghai Delong Steel group. This high-profile meeting, attended by leading figures from Sonarem and Feral, aimed to explore potential avenues of cooperation and investment.

The discussions, held with the Vice President and General Manager of the Chinese complex “Shanghai Delong Steel,” delved into opportunities for collaboration in the manufacturing industry, focusing on the production of manufactured and semi-finished steel products. The utilization of raw iron extracted from the Gara Djebilet mine was a central theme during talks with the Chinese giant, which boasts an annual production of 35 million tons of steel and iron, a substantial $35 billion in revenue, and a workforce of 46,000.

During the meeting, both parties expressed a strong commitment to advancing their collaboration. Emphasis was placed on intensifying exchanges and visits to open new horizons of cooperation, thereby deepening the partnership between the mining institutions of Algeria and China.

Minister Arkab underscored Algeria’s eagerness to develop and strengthen cooperation with Chinese companies in the mining sector, drawing parallels with the Gara Djebilet project. The collaborative efforts are expected to extend to the realization of joint projects in manufacturing industries, aiming to supply the national steel industry and facilitate the export of surpluses.

This strategic engagement reflects the mutual interest of Algeria and Shanghai Delong Steel in fostering enduring partnerships, tapping into shared expertise, and contributing to the growth and sustainability of the steel industry.
