A Collaborative Initiative Aims to Enhance Specialized Environmental Media Content and Strengthen Partnerships for Biodiversity Conservation

Algiers, Algeria | May 20th, 2025 — In a move to amplify environmental awareness across Algeria, the Ministry of Communication and the Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life have announced a joint program dedicated to training journalists on environmental issues. This initiative seeks to encourage the production of specialized media content focused on ecological challenges and to foster effective partnerships between media outlets and relevant institutional bodies.

The announcement was made during a study day organized in celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity, observed annually on May 22 under the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.”

Minister of Communication Mohamed Meziane emphasized in his address the pivotal role of media in educating the public on environmental matters. He highlighted that his ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life, plans to launch nationwide awareness campaigns engaging various media platforms to elevate environmental consciousness among Algerian citizens.

Simultaneously, Minister of Environment and Quality of Life Nadjiba Djilali revealed that her department is finalizing the new National Strategy for the Conservation and Enhancement of Biological Diversity for the period 2025-2030. Developed through a participatory approach supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), this comprehensive strategy encompasses 24 national goals, including 11 specifically targeting media, awareness, and environmental education.

Minister Djilali underscored the indispensable role of national media as a fundamental partner in efforts to safeguard biodiversity and ensure the sustainable use of natural resources. She further outlined plans to launch a multi-platform national communication plan equipped with all necessary technical and informational tools to promote this strategy effectively. She stressed the critical importance of collaborative efforts among diverse stakeholders to achieve these goals.

Natasha van Rijn, UNDP representative in Algeria, lauded the Algerian government’s proactive measures in environmental protection and urged the country’s media community to act as ambassadors for biodiversity by shedding light on related challenges and opportunities.

Representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Directorate for African Affairs echoed the growing global attention towards ecological issues and commended Algeria’s significant initiatives in protecting the environment and biological diversity.

The event featured a sensitization advertisement spotlighting biodiversity in Algeria, alongside presentations and workshops centered on global and local targets and the indispensable role of media in translating these goals into on-the-ground impact.
