Algerian Ministry of Communication and UNICEF Workshop Underlines Media’s Crucial Role in Safeguarding Children’s Rights

Algiers – September 2025 – In a significant step to strengthen awareness and protection of minors, the Algerian Ministry of Communication, in collaboration with UNICEF, organized a high-level workshop on Thursday focused on “The Role of Media in Safeguarding Children’s Rights.” The initiative underscores the pivotal role of responsible and conscientious media in amplifying efforts to uphold the rights and welfare of children across Algeria.
Opening the workshop, Minister of Communication Zoheir Bouamama emphasized that the well-being of children stands at the core of the President’s policy priorities and national public policy. Citing the ongoing school year, the minister highlighted that approximately 12 million schoolchildren, 2 million university students, and 1 million vocational trainees are beneficiaries of Algeria’s commitment to childhood development and education.
Algeria, a signatory of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child since 1992, has established comprehensive laws and mechanisms to protect the physical and moral integrity of minors and ensure sustained support until adulthood. Among these measures is mandatory education from ages six to sixteen, reflecting the country’s systematic approach to safeguarding children’s fundamental rights.
Addressing journalists, Minister Bouamama stressed the need for prudence, responsibility, and ethical reporting when covering issues concerning vulnerable children, urging the media to present reality faithfully while shielding minors from harmful exposure. “A good journalist relays reality as it exists,” he stated, reinforcing the importance of integrity in reporting.
The minister concluded his address with a poignant reference to the plight of children in Gaza, who continue to endure violence, famine, and bereavement, alongside the deprivation of schooling for nearly two years. He reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, linking domestic child protection policies to a broader humanitarian conscience.
Furthermore, the Secretary-General of the Ministry emphasized the necessity of specialized journalism, noting that professional and rigorous coverage is best achieved when entrusted to experts with domain-specific knowledge. The workshop thus serves as both a practical guide and a moral imperative for media professionals to elevate reporting standards on issues affecting Algeria’s most vulnerable citizens.
