Algerian Navy Executes Urgent Medical Evacuation of British Passenger off Skikda Coast

Algiers – October 2025 – In a remarkable display of professionalism and humanitarian commitment, units of the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP), through the Coast Guard Command of the Naval Forces, carried out a high-risk emergency medical evacuation of a British national who suffered a severe medical crisis aboard a passenger vessel off the coast of Cap de Fer in the wilaya of Skikda.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of National Defence (MDN), the incident occurred in the morning of October 8, 2025, when the National Maritime Surveillance and Rescue Operations Centre, part of the National Coast Guard Service, received an urgent distress call from the crew of the cruise ship “Sky Princess”, traveling from Italy to Spain. The distress message reported a serious medical emergency involving a British passenger who required immediate evacuation and specialized medical attention.
Reacting swiftly and decisively, the Algerian Navy launched a maritime medical evacuation operation at a distance of 35 nautical miles north of Cap de Fer (Skikda). The operation was executed using a Search and Rescue helicopter (AS-14) belonging to the 560th Helicopter Squadron for Search and Rescue, a specialized unit trained for complex maritime interventions under critical conditions.
The MDN communiqué confirmed that the British passenger was safely airlifted and transported to El Hadjar Hospital in Annaba, where he was admitted to receive urgent and comprehensive medical care.
This successful rescue underscores the efficiency, readiness, and humanitarian vocation of the Algerian Naval Forces, whose interventions are not limited to defense operations but extend to life-saving missions in international waters. It also highlights Algeria’s strict adherence to maritime safety protocols and its commitment to upholding international humanitarian obligations at sea.
Through the prompt coordination between naval command units, air support, and medical services, the Algerian People’s National Army once again reaffirmed its capacity to act swiftly and decisively in life-threatening situations, ensuring the safety of all individuals navigating Algerian waters, regardless of nationality.
