Algerian Red Crescent President Hamlaoui Addresses Donation Controversy, Highlights Collaborative Efforts with Charitable Associations and Civil Society

ALGIERS- During a press conference, Dr. Ibtissem Hamlaoui, the President of the Algerian Red Crescent, took accountability for her statements amid recent controversy, clarifying that they were subject to misinterpretation. She stressed the institution’s commitment to transparency, affirming its policy of inclusivity towards all donors and its dedication to upholding accountability standards.
Hamlaoui urged unity amidst internal strife, emphasizing the significance of solidarity and acknowledging the invaluable contributions of volunteers. She underscored the importance of collaborative efforts within Algeria, advocating for partnerships with various charitable associations and civil society organizations. Notably, she emphasized the crucial role played by charitable initiatives, including those facilitated by entities like the People’s National Army and diplomatic channels.
Regarding the rejection of financial donations, Hamlaoui clarified that the preference for food aid over monetary contributions aimed to streamline transactions. She reiterated the Red Crescent’s stance on donor autonomy, affirming that contributors are free to select the form of assistance they prefer.
Moreover, Hamlaoui elucidated the organization’s refusal to collect funds, citing logistical constraints in fund transfer mechanisms and reiterating the state’s authority in aid allocation.
Algerian Red Crescent Reveals Ramadan Activities Report
During the presentation, Ibtissem Hamlaoui revealed the organization’s activities report for the holy month of Ramadan, shining a spotlight on notable accomplishments and humanitarian endeavors.
Hamlaoui accentuated a notable threefold increase in outcomes compared to the preceding year, crediting this achievement to the generosity of contributors and the unwavering commitment of volunteers.
Furthermore, Hamlaoui highlighted the establishment of three substantial tents in Algiers, Ain Defla, Mila, and Djabbahia throughout Ramadan, with each facility catering to 1,200 meals daily.
The Algerian Red Crescent distributed 152,549 food parcels to families, totaling 40 tons of food, along with mattresses and blankets. Additionally, the organization conducted 5,565 circumcision operations nationwide and distributed 35,864 children’s garments during the Eid al-Fitr celebration.
Highlighting the essential role of volunteers, Hamlaoui noted the establishment of 226 restaurants at all border points, with 90% of the Algerian Red Crescent’s efforts attributed to their contributions.
In addition, Hamlaoui revealed plans for the opening of three centers to cater to autistic children, furthering the Algerian Red Crescent’s commitment to humanitarian causes and community welfare.
The organization also contributed to the preparation of Quranic schools for the first time by sending 40 tons of food supplies and 1,960 units of bedding and blankets.
Moreover, Hamlaoui revealed that the Algerian Red Crescent conducted 5,665 circumcision operations for children and provided medical tests, festive clothing, and distributed 35,864 garments during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations, alleviating the burden on disadvantaged families.
The president also announced the opening of free pharmacies, with the first one established at the Mustapha Bacha University Hospital. These pharmacies will provide various medications, diapers, adult diapers, electric and manual wheelchairs, and other aids to patients.
Looking ahead, preparations are underway for the summer season to address potential fire outbreaks, as well as for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. Hamlaoui announced a general assembly scheduled for April 27 to discuss the Algerian Red Crescent’s achievements and future plans.
Algerian Red Crescent Sends 420 Tons of Aid to Gaza
Expanding on Algeria’s broader humanitarian efforts, Hamlaoui highlighted the nation’s comprehensive support for undocumented migrants, encompassing essential services like healthcare, sustenance, and education. She underscored the Red Crescent’s pivotal role in delivering critical healthcare and psychological assistance to migrants. She referred to 90 tons of assistance to Sahrawi refugees in Tindouf camps and 400 tons of aid to undocumented migrants, ensuring access to essential supplies, such as bedding, blankets, and clothing.
Hamlaoui highlighted the collaborative efforts involved in providing assistance to Gaza, which engaged a range of Algerian organizations and businesses. This joint initiative enabled the Algerian Red Crescent to prepare and coordinate aid shipments, totaling 420 tons directed to Palestine.
Furthermore, Hamlaoui revealed the establishment of 16 medical clinics in remote and border areas to provide essential medical services.
