Algerian Representative Calls for Immediate Action in Response to ICJ Provisional Measures on Gaza

Algerian Representative Calls for Immediate Action in Response to ICJ Provisional Measures on Gaza

BY: Dr. Hana Saada

New York, January 31, 2024- In a compelling statement during the Security Council Open Debate on the Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, Mr. Amar Bendjama, the permanent representative of Algeria, expressed gratitude to the French presidency for promptly convening the meeting and thanked Mr. Martin Griffiths for his comprehensive briefing.

The meeting took place amid the fifth month of aggression against the Palestinian people, following the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) decision to examine acts of violations of the United Nations Convention on Genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Mr. Bendjama emphasized the historic significance of the ICJ’s decision, asserting that it marks the end of impunity. He underscored the international community’s commitment to holding criminals accountable, stating that the Zionist entity, as the occupying force, should not be exempt from this principle.

Highlighting President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s stance, Mr. Bendjama quoted, “History will record everyone behind the Gaza genocide as criminals of war, enemies of life and humanity.” He stressed the importance of ensuring accountability to protect future generations from the atrocities committed in Gaza.

The Algerian representative reaffirmed the imperative implementation of the ICJ’s provisional measures to safeguard the Palestinian people from genocide. He called on the Zionist entity to promptly comply with these measures, and the international community to ensure their enforcement.

Mr. Bendjama urged an immediate cessation of the ongoing aggression, emphasizing that the provisional measures, as determined by the ICJ, can only be applied through an immediate ceasefire. He implored all those who oppose this to question their conscience and reassess their humanity.

Describing the situation in Gaza as a humanitarian catastrophe and a complete genocide, Mr. Bendjama presented alarming statistics, illustrating the daily toll on innocent lives, including deaths, injuries, amputations without anesthesia, and the dire conditions faced by newborns.

“Not ceasing fire implies acceptance of the following:

– 250 individuals will be killed every day.
– 100 children will lose their lives daily.
– 10 children will endure limb amputations daily, without anesthesia.
– 170 infants will be born daily on the streets and at hospital entrances due to the absence of healthcare services.
– 90 percent of Gaza’s population will be left homeless and hungry.
– 10,000 individuals suffering from cancer will die every moment due to the lack of chemotherapy treatment.

It is a humanitarian catastrophe unfolding before our eyes, a fully-fledged crime against humanity. There is nothing that can justify this brutality against the Palestinian people,” stressed the Algerian official.

Concluding his statement, Mr. Bendjama called on the Security Council to take immediate and necessary measures to uphold the voice of justice and ensure the implementation of the ICJ’s decisions.

The call for urgent action to address the plight of Palestinians in Gaza echoes the sentiments of many who advocate for justice and an end to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
