Algerian Senate Condemns “Shameful Provocation” by French Senators: A Stark Warning Against Neo-Colonial Interference

Algiers, Algeria | June 3rd, 2025 — In an unprecedented and fierce condemnation, Algeria’s upper house of Parliament expressed its “deep indignation” and unequivocal rejection of “the new and calculated provocation” by members of the French Senate. The statement, issued Tuesday and presided over by Council Speaker Azouz Nasri, denounced “the recurring hostile behavior of certain far-right figures within the French legislature,” accusing them of openly undermining the sovereignty of the Algerian state and attempting to revive colonial-era arrogance under the guise of democratic values.

The Council’s Bureau stated it was following “with intense disapproval and alarm this renewed and deliberate drift by French senators who, under the banner of freedom and justice, harbor a clear agenda of hostility towards Algeria.” Labeling these individuals as “the true obstacle to sound Algerian-French relations,” the communiqué accused them of sabotaging diplomatic progress and deepening mistrust between the two nations.

The statement did not mince words in highlighting that these senators have “repeatedly welcomed known terrorists affiliated with an outlawed organization,” in clear reference to figures from extremist separatist movements. “They parade their betrayal with no shame and no concern for the catastrophic consequences their acts might unleash on the present and future of bilateral ties,” the Council stated, adding that such figures “persist in mimicking the reactionary patterns of their colonial forebears, entirely blind to the difference between justice and manipulation.”

A Colonial Reflex in a Republican Mask

The statement also underlined the hypocrisy of these far-right elements who, while proclaiming themselves defenders of human rights, democracy, and free speech, systematically target Algeria’s national unity and institutions. “Living in a state of historical amnesia and hallucinations of bygone domination, these factions remain locked in a fantasy of interventionism, aiming to destabilize Algeria’s internal affairs and challenge its constitutional order,” the Council emphasized.

Far from tolerating such provocations, Algeria has responded with defiance. “The Algerian people and state, under the wise leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, continue to consolidate the foundations of a participatory democracy and a just state governed by the rule of law. Algeria’s sovereignty is not up for debate, and its decisions will not be dictated by foreign entities intoxicated with outdated hegemonic impulses,” the statement declared.

The Council affirmed that Algeria “has never and will never yield to interference,” warning Paris that continued provocations risk causing irreparable harm to already delicate bilateral relations. “Algeria is a nation forged in resistance. Its unity is as strong as a chain whose every link vibrates with collective strength and awareness. No veiled attack—whether disguised as a human rights concern or a call for justice—will be tolerated.”

Concluding its statement with a stark warning, the Council of the Nation asserted that Algeria holds those responsible for such provocations fully accountable for any deterioration in diplomatic relations between the two countries. “Those who sleepwalk into chaos, driven by obsession and historical denial, will bear the full responsibility for any consequences—be they political, social, or economic—that may ensue from this systematic hostility.”
