On UIPA’s 51st Anniversary, the Speaker of Algeria’s Parliament Urges Deeper Regional Solidarity and Stronger Parliamentary Diplomacy to Confront Ongoing Crises

Algiers, Algeria | June 21st, 2025 —  Marking its 51st anniversary since its founding on June 21, 1974, the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIPA) has renewed its call for deeper solidarity among Arab nations to safeguard regional security, stability, and sovereignty, with a powerful emphasis on resolving the Palestinian cause—the Arab world’s central and enduring struggle.

In a statement signed by its current president, Brahim Boughali, who also serves as the Speaker of Algeria’s People’s National Assembly (APN), the UIPA reaffirmed its founding vision rooted in “dialogue, mutual understanding, and parliamentary diplomacy” as essential tools to navigate a region beset by escalating crises and foreign interference.

“The UIPA was born out of a forward-looking perspective that sought to substitute confrontation with dialogue and division with consensus, activating parliamentary diplomacy to complement official state efforts,” Boughali declared, reiterating that the union’s mission remains as relevant today as it was half a century ago.

The statement highlights the growing urgency for collective action in the face of mounting threats to Arab national security and sovereignty, particularly with regard to the continued suffering of the Palestinian people. It denounced the systematic obstacles that still hinder a fair resolution to the Palestinian issue, describing it as “the foremost priority and moral compass of the Arab world.”

The UIPA also emphasized the progress achieved in modernizing its own internal structure, citing charter reforms and new parliamentary frameworks designed to bolster the effectiveness of Arab legislative institutions at national, regional, and international levels.

“Today, more than ever, the Arab world needs a unified parliamentary voice to assert its rights, protect its borders, and promote justice and prosperity across its societies,” read the statement. It called on Arab parliaments to amplify their diplomatic engagement and “actively participate in breaking the deadlock surrounding regional issues,” while standing firm against any violations of Arab dignity, independence, and historical claims.

Underscoring its long-standing commitment to reasoned discourse, the UIPA declared its intent to revitalize Arab parliamentary cooperation and pursue a path of non-alignment, peace-building, and respect for international law, while remaining steadfast in the defense of Arab causes.

In conclusion, the UIPA urged member states and legislative bodies to mobilize more decisively, both politically and diplomatically, to ensure that the Arab region is no longer fragmented or manipulated by external powers, but rather empowered by unity, shared vision, and strategic cooperation.
