Karima Bakir Tafer Highlights Algeria’s Mineral Potential and Ongoing Reforms to Strengthen the Global Position of the Mining Sector

Algiers, Algeria | May 7th, 2025 —  In a move to bolster Algeria’s standing in the global mining industry, Karima Bakir Tafer, the Algerian State Secretary for Energy, in charge of mining, delivered a keynote address on May 6, 2025, at the CIM Connect 2025 Conference in Montreal, Canada. Leading the Algerian delegation, Bakir Tafer outlined the strategic prospects and ongoing transformation of Algeria’s mining sector, with a focus on the country’s vast mineral resources and its forward-looking policies aimed at industrial development.

Bakir Tafer stressed the country’s investment in skill-building and capacity development as vital for the success of its mining sector. “The development of human resources is fundamental to the success of our industrial and mining transformation,” she added, highlighting Algeria’s efforts to foster a skilled workforce equipped to drive the sector forward.

The Algerian delegation’s participation at CIM Connect 2025 underscored the country’s determination to strengthen international cooperation, particularly with Canada. Discussions at the conference focused on how Algeria and Canada could collaborate more closely on mining resource development, technology transfer, investment partnerships, and scientific research. This collaboration is an integral part of Algeria’s broader strategy to diversify its economy and enhance its non-hydrocarbon exports.

As part of the national strategy to move beyond oil and gas, Algeria is taking decisive steps to develop its mining sector as a major driver of economic growth.
