Minister Kamel Baddari Hails Historic Achievement as Algeria Emerges Leader in Maghreb Academic Performance and Climbs to Second Place in Africa

Algiers, Algeria | June 18th, 2025 —   Algeria has achieved a landmark academic milestone with 53 of its universities ranked in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025, marking a record-breaking performance in North Africa. This exceptional outcome was announced by Kamel Baddari, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, who celebrated the accomplishment in an official post on his Facebook page.

The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings assess universities worldwide based on their contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 2025 edition evaluated 2,526 institutions from 130 countries, measuring their societal and environmental impact through strict and credible criteria, including research excellence, teaching quality, community partnerships, and sustainability initiatives.

Among the standout performers, Algeria’s University of Oued Souf was ranked among the top 400 globally, a remarkable distinction positioning it among the world’s elite institutions. Khenchela University and Oum El Bouaghi University secured the second tier, followed by M’Sila University in third and Souk Ahras University, which made its debut in the rankings, placed fourth.

“This recognition reflects Algeria’s strategic investment in the higher education sector and underscores the determination of our academic institutions to play a central role in solving global challenges such as poverty, climate change, and social inequality,” Baddari stated.

He emphasized that this progress is the direct result of a national policy aimed at internationalizing Algerian universities, elevating their global visibility, and making them more competitive across global rankings. “Our universities today dominate the Maghreb region and stand proudly as the second best in Africa, a position earned through resilience, innovation, and reform,” Baddari affirmed.

The Times Higher Education ranking is considered one of the most rigorous global benchmarks, offering reliable data that guides students, governments, researchers, and industries alike. Algeria’s ascent is thus a testament to the country’s successful education reform strategy, championed under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Adding further momentum to this achievement, the recent visit of Ashwin Jerome Fernandes, Executive Director of QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), another major global university ranking agency, paved the way for the implementation of a national cooperation strategy and long-term roadmap to bolster the international competitiveness of Algerian academic institutions.
