Algiers – October 2025 – In a deeply spiritual and solemn observance, Algerians across the nation performed the Rain-Seeking Prayer (Salat al-Istisqa) on the morning of Saturday, November 1, 2025, responding to the call of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments. This nationwide initiative comes after a prolonged delay in rainfall affecting numerous regions, reflecting both faith and a collective reliance on divine providence.
The practice draws inspiration from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who would lead Salat al-Istisqa (Rain-Seeking Prayer) during periods of drought, turning to God in reliance, supplication, and seeking mercy and rain. As noted in the Ministry’s recent directive, “When drought occurs, the Prophet ﷺ would proceed to the prayer place, face the Qibla, adjust his garment, and perform two units of prayer,” citing authentic narrations from the two Sahih collections.
The Ministry emphasized that the prayer serves not only to beseech rainfall but also as an occasion to revive the spirit of repentance and return to God. Imams were called upon to guide worshippers toward sincere acts of seeking forgiveness, redressing injustices, strengthening family ties, and performing acts of fasting and charity, all considered avenues for invoking divine mercy and blessings.
During the prayers, imams and worshippers supplicated with the traditional invocation: “O Allah, grant us rain that is abundant, beneficial, and not harmful, immediate and not delayed; O Allah, bless us with rain and do not let us be among the despairing.”
Mosques witnessed widespread participation from citizens, who attended with their families and children, creating a powerful display of spiritual solidarity and social cohesion.
