New York — In a diplomatic achievement, Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has been elected Vice-President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the UN’s principal organs charged with advancing sustainable development across the globe.

This election represents international recognition of Algeria’s consistent efforts to champion equitable, inclusive, and sustainable development at both regional and global levels. ECOSOC plays a central role in coordinating international efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, while also addressing the pressing economic, social, and environmental challenges facing member states.

With this new leadership role, Algeria is set to further advocate for a development paradigm grounded in economic justice and social equity. This approach aligns closely with the vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, whose national development strategy prioritizes the social dimension and underscores sustainable development as a cornerstone of economic policymaking.
