Algiers, Algeria | June 4th, 2025 — In a significant milestone for Algeria and African judicial representation, Honourable Judge Dr. Chafika Bensaoula has been elected Vice President of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, solidifying her influential role in the continent’s highest human rights tribunal.

Judge Bensaoula’s election was confirmed during the 7th Ordinary Session of the African Court, currently being held at its official headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania, according to an official communiqué issued by the Court.

This elevation follows the conclusion of the mandate of the previous president, Justice Imani Daud Aboud of Tanzania, who served with distinction for four years. As part of the Court’s leadership reshuffle, Malian Judge Modibo Sacko now assumes the presidency, while Judge Bensaoula steps into the vice-presidential role for a two-year term, in accordance with Article 21 of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which governs the operations of the Court.

Judge Chafika Bensaoula brings to the role an exceptional academic and professional background. She holds a Doctorate of State in Public Law and has built a distinguished career as a legal scholar, jurist, and advocate for human rights and the rule of law. Her initial election to the African Court dates back to January 2017, and in recognition of her legal acumen and contributions, she was re-elected in February 2023 for a second six-year term.

This achievement is not only a personal milestone for Judge Bensaoula but also a proud moment for Algeria, reaffirming its commitment to the African human rights system and its continuing investment in legal excellence and international cooperation.
