Algeria’s Comprehensive Mine Awareness Strategy Earns National and International Acclaim

On the occasion of the International Day for Mine Awareness, the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) commended Algeria’s comprehensive and methodical approach to addressing the legacy and ongoing risks posed by landmines. The observance, marked globally on April 4, highlights the dangers these remnants of conflict continue to present, particularly in regions historically affected by colonial-era deployments.
In an official statement, the CNDH emphasized that Algeria’s strategy transcends mere clearance operations. It integrates victim care, encompassing both medical treatment and psychosocial support, alongside the strengthening of legal and regulatory frameworks to safeguard rights and ensure full societal integration for survivors. This multidimensional approach positions Algeria as a model for nations confronting similar post-conflict challenges.
The Council recalled the extensive human toll imposed by mines left behind during the colonial period, whose consequences persisted long after independence, inflicting profound human suffering and socio-economic disruption. Through sustained national commitment and continuous mobilization, Algeria successfully mitigated these dangers, securing previously contaminated lands and achieving measurable progress in clearance and decontamination operations.
Algeria’s efforts have also extended to the international sphere, actively participating in multilateral initiatives to prohibit and criminalize the use of landmines, in cooperation with the United Nations and other global actors. The CNDH highlighted that these initiatives are anchored in a principled dedication to fundamental human rights, foremost among them the right to life, personal security, and freedom of movement.
The Council further called for the continuation and intensification of both national and international efforts in mine awareness. It stressed the importance of cultivating a culture of prevention and amplifying public information campaigns, particularly in areas historically affected, to protect lives and enhance collective understanding of the severity of this threat.
Algeria’s sustained commitment to mine clearance, victim support, and preventive awareness underscores its role as a regional leader in addressing the humanitarian and security challenges posed by explosive remnants of conflict, demonstrating a model of integrated national and international engagement.
