Algeria’s Enduring Commitment to Palestine: The 1988 State Proclamation Revisited as a Defining Historical Turning Point

Algiers – November 2025 – Algiers once again stands at the centre of Palestinian collective memory as the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Algeria marks the 37th anniversary of the 1988 Proclamation of the State of Palestine—an event it describes as a “historic turning point” that restored the Palestinian cause to the forefront of global consciousness. In a statement issued on Saturday, the embassy recalled the solemn moment when the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat read the Declaration of Independence from Algiers, a land “blessed and watered by the blood of martyrs,” during the 19th session of the Palestinian National Council.
The declaration, born of enormous sacrifices, did not merely announce the birth of a state on paper; it repositioned the Palestinian struggle at the centre of international debate, giving it renewed global visibility at a time when geopolitical complexities threatened to eclipse its urgency. The symbolic and political weight of Algiers in this moment is profound: Algeria was the first country to officially recognise the State of Palestine—a gesture that preceded recognition from 160 other nations and cemented Algiers’ role as a steadfast, principled defender of Palestinian rights.
The embassy’s statement retraced the major milestones of Palestinian resistance and steadfastness, placing this year’s commemoration against a tragic and explosive backdrop. The Palestinian people, it noted, continue to endure grave violations in Al Quds, the West Bank, and particularly in the Gaza Strip, which has been subjected to over two years of genocide, systematic ethnic cleansing, and mass destruction—leaving thousands of martyrs, wounded, and missing persons. These atrocities constitute the darkest chapter in a history marked by dispossession, siege, and displacement.
Yet, despite these horrific circumstances, the Palestinian people remain “courageous and resilient on their land,” reaffirming before the world an unwavering attachment to their national rights, anchored in international legitimacy. Their commitment to their historic constants—paid for with the lives of countless children, leaders, and defenders—endures until the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Al Quds as its eternal capital.
In this solemn context, the Embassy of the State of Palestine expressed deep gratitude to the people, government, and president of Algeria for their unwavering and honourable positions in support of Palestine at all international fora, including the United Nations Security Council. Algeria’s principled diplomacy, anchored in its own revolutionary legacy and moral clarity, has consistently defended the Palestinian right to freedom, statehood, and dignity—earning it profound respect among Palestinians and across the Arab world.
