Algiers, Algeria | July 21st, 2024 — Algeria’s export sector is poised for significant growth, with projections suggesting that exports could reach $30 billion by 2030. This ambitious target was confirmed by Hussein Zaoui, Director General of the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, during a recent awareness day on exportation.

Future Growth Projections

Zaoui highlighted the country’s potential to achieve this milestone, attributing it to Algeria’s existing capabilities and resources. He emphasized the importance for economic operators to adhere to export standards, including product quality, packaging, and competitiveness in foreign markets. Compliance with these standards is crucial for meeting international expectations and ensuring the success of Algerian exports.

Recent Developments in Non-Hydrocarbon Exports

Kamal Khafash, Director of External Cooperation and Partnerships at the Chamber, provided an overview of recent progress in the non-hydrocarbon export sector. Initially valued at approximately $2 billion, non-hydrocarbon exports have surged to nearly $7 billion following the implementation of a national export promotion strategy and various support measures. Khafash expressed confidence that the sector could reach $30 billion within the next six years.

Supportive Measures and Business Environment

Khafash noted several factors contributing to this optimistic outlook, including a favorable business climate that encourages both local and foreign investors. Key initiatives include financial support through a special export promotion fund, which covers export-related costs, as well as fiscal and customs incentives. These measures aim to help businesses leverage available opportunities and strengthen their presence in international markets.

Exporting as a Strategic Priority

Emphasizing the significance of exportation, Khafash remarked on Algeria’s transition from a major importer of materials such as construction supplies, food products, cement, and ceramics to becoming a prominent exporter. He stressed the need to maintain this trajectory and to focus on expanding the range of exported products.

Sectoral Diversification and Future Outlook

The Algerian government’s strategic focus on diversifying its export portfolio aligns with broader economic goals. By investing in various industrial sectors and enhancing agricultural production, Algeria aims to establish a robust and competitive export sector. This strategic approach not only targets increased export volumes but also seeks to ensure sustainable growth and long-term economic stability.

In summary, Algeria’s commitment to expanding its export capabilities, supported by targeted policies and strategic investments, positions the country to potentially achieve its $30 billion export goal by 2030. The concerted efforts of both public authorities and private sector operators will be crucial in realizing this ambitious target.
