Algiers, Algeria | September 4th, 2024 — Mohamed Laagab, the Minister of Communication, assured that extensive measures have been implemented to support the media in covering the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for September 7. During a visit to the International Press Center (CIP) situated at the International Conference Center (CIC) in Algiers, Laagab outlined the steps taken to facilitate media operations throughout the electoral process.

Laagab revealed that over 1,500 journalists are expected to cover the presidential election, including more than 100 foreign journalists from around twenty countries. In addition to these, 50 correspondents and media bureaus will be deployed nationally. The Minister highlighted that the ministry has provided all necessary resources to ensure that journalists can effectively inform both the national and international public about the election.

Enhanced Facilities and Technical Support

A significant development for this electoral cycle is the allocation of dedicated studios for digital media outlets, reflecting the country’s commitment to advancing digital journalism. The media landscape currently features around 156 electronic newspapers, and this initiative aims to bolster their capacity to cover the elections.

Laagab emphasized that the Ministry of Communication does not oversee the electoral process itself; this responsibility falls to the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE). However, the ministry has ensured that journalists from both national and international press have free access to 90% of the provided resources.

State-of-the-Art Equipment and Services

The CIP facilities have been upgraded with advanced technology to support media coverage. Laagab inaugurated several technical spaces at the CIP, including more than 150 computers equipped with high-speed internet and access to the APS (Algeria Press Service) in multiple languages: Arabic, French, English, and Spanish. For the first time, robotic cameras have been introduced to enhance the technical capabilities of the CIP.

Additionally, the Algerian Broadcasting Company (TDA) has set up a stand at the CIC to offer comprehensive broadcasting services to both national and international media. Canon has been contracted to provide technical assistance throughout the election period, ensuring quick resolution of any equipment issues.

Historical Exhibition and Ongoing Support

Laagab also inaugurated an exhibition organized by the National Center for Documentation, Press, Image, and Information (CNDPI), showcasing the history of presidential elections in Algeria from the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA) to the present day.

Overall, the measures and resources provided underscore a strong commitment to facilitating media coverage and ensuring a transparent and well-documented electoral process.
