Algiers, October 25, 2023 – Algeria is making significant strides in its maritime and air transport infrastructure, aimed at enhancing its capabilities for trade and commerce. The Minister of Transport, Mr. Amar Cherfa, recently unveiled a comprehensive plan that includes new port facilities and expanded air routes to further stimulate the nation’s economy.

Port Upgrades: Doubling Container Capacity and Beyond
In a groundbreaking move, four new quays are set to come into operation at the Port of Algiers, effectively doubling the capacity for container handling. Additionally, extensive restoration efforts are underway at the Port of Annaba, and the container quays at the Port of Djen Djen in Jijel are being reinstated to accommodate large vessels.
Reviving the National Maritime Fleet
The restructuring of the nation’s cargo transport fleet is underway, in accordance with the directives of the President of the Republic. A noteworthy development in this process is the impending launch of CNAN El Djazair, a new maritime company formed from the merger of CNAN Nord and CNAN Med. This new entity will be equipped with a fleet of modern vessels, reinforcing Algeria’s position in international maritime trade.
Air Transport Expansion: New Routes and Accessibility
Air transport is also at the forefront of Algeria’s economic vision. The Minister emphasized the significance of the new expansion strategy for Air Algérie, the national carrier. Several new routes have been inaugurated, with the upcoming launch of the “Alger-Caracas” route and efforts underway to establish an “Alger-New York” route. These new routes are expected to greatly facilitate the movement of Algerian business operators.
In a move aimed at supporting trade, Minister Cherfa announced that reasonable tariffs would be applied to air transport services for product samples that economic operators wish to promote.
Enhanced Cargo Transport
Furthermore, the Minister revealed plans to bring two cargo freight aircraft back into service before November 15th, in addition to the conversion of two Boeing aircraft for cargo operations. These actions will bolster the nation’s logistics capabilities and ensure the efficient transportation of goods.
Algeria’s ambitious infrastructure and transport expansion plan is a testament to the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth and strengthening its position on the global stage. With new port facilities and air routes, the nation is poised for greater trade and increased economic activity in the near future.
