Algeria’s Non-Hydrocarbon Exports Surge 231% Since 2019, Cementing Economic Diversification Drive

Algiers, Algeria | Algeria’s ambitious economic diversification strategy is delivering tangible results, with non-hydrocarbon exports recording an extraordinary 231% surge since 2019. In a global environment marked by volatile commodity prices and a slowdown in international trade, the country has defied the odds — achieving export levels that dwarf pre-2019 figures.

Official data from the National Statistics Office (ONS) reveals that the value of non-hydrocarbon exports skyrocketed from 249.1 billion dinars in 2019 to a record-breaking 826.4 billion dinars in 2022. This unprecedented growth reflects a deliberate expansion of the export base, which now encompasses high-value categories such as food products, oils and fats, chemicals, manufactured goods, and machinery and transport equipment.

Even through the price declines of 2023 and early 2024, Algeria maintained momentum, reinforcing its presence in global markets and further diversifying its export basket. In the first quarter of this year alone, non-hydrocarbon exports reached 116.9 billion dinars (about USD 885 million) — a performance underscored by a 5.8% increase in average export prices compared to the same period in 2024, signaling enhanced competitiveness and added value.

The ONS report highlights that nearly all non-hydrocarbon categories experienced price growth, with the exception of food, beverages, and tobacco. Machinery and transport equipment, in particular, registered a remarkable 16.1% increase year-on-year, underscoring the structural shift towards high-technology and industrial exports.
