Algiers – November 2025 – In a continental context marked by escalating political, economic, and security challenges, Algeria’s parliamentary diplomacy is increasingly recognized as a stabilizing force and a pivotal actor in Africa’s collective efforts to confront these pressing issues. This growing acknowledgment was reaffirmed by Fortune Charumbira, President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), following an audience granted to him on Saturday by Nasri Azouz, Speaker of the Council of the Nation.
Charumbira underscored that African nations are now called upon—more urgently than ever—to consolidate their efforts and strengthen strategic cooperation, highlighting Algeria’s indispensable leadership role. He emphasized that many countries across the continent continue to count on Algeria to sustain its proactive initiatives, extend its support, and advance a shared vision for development and sovereignty.
Reflecting on his discussions in Algiers, the PAP President stated that the meeting offered a crucial opportunity to examine major issues shaping the African continent and the multifaceted challenges it faces. Charumbira stressed that Algeria plays an essential role in international affairs, particularly regarding the Palestinian question. He recalled that “Algeria was the first country at the United Nations to condemn all violations and bombardments carried out in Palestine,” reaffirming the country’s unwavering ethical and diplomatic stance.
In this regard, Charumbira reiterated that Algeria remains highly solicited to continue its historic leadership in supporting African nations on their paths to development. He recalled that, in the aftermath of its own independence, Algeria extended assistance to several African liberation movements and emerging states —including Zimbabwe—helping them achieve sovereignty. “For this reason, we are called, more than ever, to support one another,” he affirmed.
Turning to economic integration, Charumbira noted that intra-African trade continues to lag far behind the continent’s true potential. He expressed hope that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), signed three years ago, will stimulate stronger commercial exchanges and create new economic opportunities. He also highlighted the continent’s youth as its primary asset—one that must be empowered with genuine prospects for prosperity and advancement.
On the security front, the PAP President observed that Africa remains undermined by severe crises, citing the situations in Mali and Sudan as stark examples. These challenges, he said, further elevate the importance of coordinated action and robust parliamentary diplomacy.
Charumbira noted that the meeting also provided an opportunity to review ongoing joint efforts within the framework of parliamentary diplomacy, through which legislative bodies across the continent strive to respond to current and future challenges. He praised the deep historical parallels between Algeria and Zimbabwe, as well as the exceptional quality of the relations linking the two nations.
The PAP President has been on an official visit to Algeria since Thursday and is expected to participate in the International Conference on Colonial Crimes scheduled for Sunday in Algiers.
