Algeria’s Strategic Leap: Mining, Industry, and Economic Sovereignty Through Landmark Projects

ALGIERS, March 17th, 2026 — Algeria is thinking big, with landmark projects taking shape, notably the zinc and lead mining project at Oued Amizour.
The launch of the exploitation and development works for the zinc-lead mine located between the municipalities of Amizour and Tala Hamza, on Tuesday, by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, marks a significant milestone in the implementation of strategic and structural projects initiated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Algeria Among the World’s Top Three in Zinc Reserves
These multifaceted achievements will enable Algeria to conserve foreign currency, build an integrated industrial base, and even venture into exports, affirming its status as a regional leader both geopolitically and economically, while projecting influence across the African continent. Having already secured energy, food, and health sovereignty, the country is now confidently advancing toward industrial sovereignty through the development and valorization of its mineral wealth.
This ambition is exemplified by the estimated 34 million tons of reserves in the Amizour-Tala Hamza zinc and lead deposit, placing Algeria among the world’s top three zinc reserve holders, and positioning the country as a significant lead supplier. These reserves will be locally extracted and processed thanks to a carefully planned investment culminating in the construction of a zinc-lead processing plant in the region. The facility represents a partnership between the Algerian companies ENOF and ORGM, and the Australian firm Terramin.
The plant is expected to process 2 million tons of raw ore annually, producing approximately 170,000 tons of zinc and 30,000 tons of lead per year. The Amizour-Tala Hamza project aligns with the president’s strategy to transform Algeria from a mere raw material supplier into a producer of processed zinc and lead ready for industrial application.
This represents a substantial added value, opening access to regional and international markets while ensuring Algeria’s domestic supply and saving enormous sums previously spent on importing treated zinc and lead.
The significance of these non-ferrous metals for Algeria cannot be overstated. Zinc is a key component in highly strategic sectors such as metallurgy, construction, and the chemical industry. Lead is indispensable in the production of car batteries, as well as for medical and nuclear shielding against X-rays and radiation, and in the manufacturing of solders and ammunition.
Gara Djebilet Sets the Benchmark
The launch of the Amizour-Tala Hamza project continues an ambitious and profitable program, following the historic commencement of operations at the Gara Djebilet iron deposit and the 950-kilometer Gara Djebilet-Tindouf-Béchar West Mining Railway, completed in a record 20 months and inaugurated by President Tebboune on February 1.
This high-impact economic project is expected to save the state approximately $1.5 billion in its first phase alone, funds previously allocated to importing iron ore for steel complexes in Oran, Jijel, and Annaba. The next phase focuses on exporting processed materials to generate significant non-hydrocarbon revenues.
President Tebboune affirmed that “the Gara Djebilet project will completely end iron ore imports within three years,” emphasizing that feasibility and profitability studies conducted by specialized international firms unanimously confirm its viability. The Gara Djebilet mine, with estimated reserves of 3.5 billion tons of ore, is paired with an adjacent processing plant capable of 4 million tons per year, utilizing technologies that achieve recovery rates exceeding 85%.
Phosphate Production to Propel Algeria Globally
The next major mining project, scheduled for full commissioning in 2026, is the integrated Bled El Hadba phosphate project in Tebessa Province, positioning Algeria among the world’s leading phosphate exporters with an annual production capacity exceeding 4 million tons of phosphate-based products. The country’s phosphate reserves exceed 3 billion tons, primarily located at the Bled El Hadba mine, which holds around 1.2 billion tons.
The project includes a 450-kilometer Eastern Mining Line connecting Bled El Hadba-Oued Kebrit-Port of Annaba, expected to be operational by year-end, transporting over 10 million tons of phosphate annually and generating an estimated $2 billion in annual revenue.
A Nationwide Industrial Mobilization
These flagship projects, executed by Algerian companies in record timelines not exceeding 24 months, generate more than economic benefits. They have sparked a national industrial and educational mobilization. Higher education and scientific research institutions have adapted by creating new specializations aligned with Algeria’s multifaceted development projects, spanning artificial intelligence, hydrocarbons, energy, pharmaceuticals, mechanical industries, and agriculture.
Vocational education has also evolved, introducing new programs and a national occupational framework to feed the labor market and meet industry demands. The Public Works and Transport sectors have been mobilized to ensure accessibility to major projects, while the Energy sector guarantees the supply of electricity and gas to all infrastructure.
This synergy has enabled Algeria to deliver large-scale projects efficiently, generating a new development momentum and advancing the country’s ambition to attain emerging economy status in the near future.
