Algeria’s Tafer Participates in the 4th International Mining Ministerial Meeting in Riyadh

Algiers, Algeria | January 15th, 2025 — On Tuesday, January 14, 2025, State Secretary to the Minister of Energy for Mines, Karima Tafer, participated in the 4th International Mining Ministerial Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of the International Mining Conference. The meeting witnessed the active involvement of Belkacem Soltani, CEO of Sonarem, alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Energy and the National Mining Corporation (Sonarem), as well as representatives from over 89 countries, including 16 from the G20. The gathering also saw the presence of 50 international organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, as well as trade unions and industry stakeholders.

The opening remarks were delivered by Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Bandar bin Ibrahim Al-Khorayef, who underscored the significance of international cooperation in overcoming the challenges facing the mining sector. Minister Al-Khorayef stressed the urgent need to enhance transparency and sustainability within the industry while promoting investments in infrastructure and cutting-edge technologies.

During her address, State Secretary Karima Tafer outlined the core elements of Algeria’s ambitious mining sector development program. She reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to advancing the mining industry and optimizing the exploitation of the country’s abundant mineral resources. State Secretary Tafer highlighted the essential role of the mining sector in achieving sustainable economic development, emphasizing the need to responsibly and sustainably harness Algeria’s natural wealth in alignment with global environmental standards.

Furthermore, she reiterated Algeria’s strategic objectives to modernize the mining infrastructure, enhance international collaboration in mineral exploration and production, and position Algeria as a key player in the global mining landscape. Tafer emphasized the importance of implementing sustainable practices within exploration and production projects, balancing industrial progress with environmental preservation.

The meeting also addressed critical initiatives aimed at fostering deeper cooperation between mineral-producing and consuming countries while bolstering technological innovation within the mining industry. These discussions are seen as pivotal to addressing the global demand for minerals, especially in the face of rising sustainability expectations and the rapid evolution of the technological sector.
