Algiers – December 2025 – Algeria is undertaking a profound qualitative transformation of its tourism sector, as the government moves decisively to consolidate the country’s position as a premier tourist destination. This initiative, articulated by Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Houria Meddahi during a forum hosted by Algerian Radio, envisions the approval of 85 tourism projects expected to create 39,000 new jobs, thereby energizing the national economy and fostering sustainable sectoral development.
Minister Meddahi emphasized that tourism represents a strategic economic lever, benefiting from a substantial state budget for the upcoming year. This financial commitment targets investment support, completion of ongoing projects, infrastructure development, and competitive incentives, all aligned with the presidential vision of a diversified, wealth-generating economy anchored in sustainable development.
Domestic Tourism as a Pillar of Local Economic Growth
Algeria’s strategy prioritizes domestic tourism to strengthen regional economies and allow Algerian families to explore the country’s diverse destinations, enhancing social cohesion. Complementarily, inbound tourism is set to attract international visitors by leveraging the nation’s rich natural and cultural assets. Algeria boasts an exceptional heritage, including over 1,200 kilometers of coastline, mountainous landscapes, and UNESCO World Heritage sites in Tipaza, Djemila (Sétif), and Souk Ahras. “Algeria ranks second globally after Rome in terms of Roman historical sites,” noted Minister Meddahi, underlining the potential for cultural tourism.
Infrastructure and Capacity Expansion
Algeria possesses a robust infrastructure network, comprising over thirty airports, an extensive and expanding road and rail system, and substantial logistical facilities. The ministry’s strategy seeks to harmonize tourism development, heritage valorization, and local economic dynamism while providing Algerians with optimal conditions to experience their country’s wealth.
For 2026, the state will allocate a significant budget to tourism, advancing major infrastructure projects and supporting investments. Meddahi highlighted that land allocations under investment laws will facilitate approximately 85 approved projects across various wilayas, with comprehensive support provided to investors, including administrative assistance and banking facilitation.
Strengthening Domestic Tourism and Employment
“Domestic tourism remains a priority to enable Algerian families to enjoy accessible vacations,” stated Meddahi. She reported that 65 projects completed by September 2025 have increased accommodation capacity from 138,000 to 148,000 beds, generating approximately 39,000 permanent jobs. The minister projects hosting four million tourists by year-end, with an objective of eight million by 2028.
Sustainable and Environmentally Respectful Tourism
Thermal and health tourism forms a strategic axis, with 282 thermal springs located across the North, High Plateaus, and South. The ministry has supported 40 thermal projects, with eight additional projects planned for 2026, alongside seawater treatment installations in coastal wilayas to promote environmentally sustainable tourism. International marketing and promotion of cultural and artistic assets remain central to the strategy.
Highlighting Oran’s achievement, Meddahi stated, “Oran was elected the best emerging tourist destination in Africa, winning the Bras d’Or 2025,” underscoring its prominence and influence. Domestic tourism is experiencing notable growth, particularly in southern wilayas, including desert tourism, while traditional handicrafts remain vital, with approximately 500,000 artisans preserving cultural heritage. Training programs are underway to enhance their skills and boost sales.
