In a landmark achievement, Algérie Télécom celebrates a major milestone in high-speed fiber optic internet and unveils Africa’s first Wifi 7 technology, promising unprecedented speeds and innovation.

Algiers, Algeria | April 30th, 2025 — Algeria has reached a significant milestone in its digital transformation, surpassing the 2 million subscriber mark for its Fiber to the Home (FTTH) network, a key indicator of the country’s increasing penetration into high-speed internet services. This milestone was celebrated alongside the unveiling of Wifi 7, the latest generation of wireless technology, in an exclusive African premiere on Tuesday.

The event, marking the 22nd anniversary of Algérie Télécom, was attended by several prominent figures, including Minister of Post and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerrouki, Minister of Vocational Training Yacine El Mahdi Oualid, Minister of Knowledge Economy, Startups, and Micro-enterprises Noureddine Ouadah, and High Commissioner for Digitization Meriem Benmouloud. The ceremony underscored the country’s push to modernize its telecommunications infrastructure and integrate it into the global digital economy.

Sid Ali Zerrouki expressed his pride over this achievement, highlighting that Algeria had gone from a modest 53,000 FTTH subscribers at the beginning of 2020 to over 2 million in just a few years. This rapid growth, he noted, aligns with international standards and showcases the political will and expertise driving the country’s technological leap.

“This qualitative leap demonstrates that with political will and the right competencies, we can catch up with the global digital economy and connect Algeria to the heart of technological innovation,” said Zerrouki.

The Minister also stressed that this achievement is part of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision for building a modern state supported by robust infrastructure, driven by a creative population and an economy founded on innovation. The government’s focus on expanding access to digital technologies reflects this broader vision.

Adel Bentoumi, CEO of Algérie Télécom, also took the stage to celebrate this historic achievement. He emphasized that the company remains committed to providing equitable services across the country and noted that this milestone was a stepping stone toward even more ambitious goals in the pursuit of sustainable development.

The highlight of the event was the launch of Wifi 7, which promises to revolutionize wireless connectivity. As the first company in Africa to roll out this cutting-edge technology, Algérie Télécom is positioning itself at the forefront of the technological race. Wifi 7 offers speeds of up to 46 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s), approximately 4.8 times faster than Wifi 6, making it ideal for demanding applications like 4K/8K streaming, virtual reality, and online gaming. It also supports more simultaneous device connections without compromising performance, providing a more stable and efficient internet experience for users.

“This technological leap with Wifi 7 is a testament to Algérie Télécom’s unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence,” said Bentoumi. “It will allow users to access faster, more reliable, and more secure internet, marking another significant step in Algeria’s digital journey.”
