Algiers Airport Goes Digital: High-Level Meeting Launches Strategic Overhaul

Algiers, Algeria | June 24th, 2025 — In a move signaling Algeria’s bold leap into the future of air transport, Minister of Transport Saïd Sayoud chaired a high-level coordination meeting on Tuesday to accelerate the digital transformation of Algiers’ Houari Boumediene International Airport. The session brought together top national security, aviation, and customs officials, reflecting the strategic weight of this modernization effort.

Among the attendees were Major General Abdelhafid Bakhouch, Director General of Algerian Customs; the CEOs of Air Algérie, the Algiers Airport Services Management Company, the National Air Navigation Company, and the National Air Navigation Services Company. Also present were senior representatives from the General Directorates of National Security, Internal Security, Documentation and External Security, alongside key officials from the Ministry of Transport.

Minister Sayoud opened the session by reiterating the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has called for a sweeping modernization of Algeria’s airport infrastructure. He announced that Algiers International Airport will serve as the pilot project, with the aim of extending the digital model to all airports nationwide. This initiative is not only a technical upgrade, but a strategic vision to enhance service quality and reinforce Algeria’s image on the global aviation map.

A technical briefing by the CEO of Algiers Airport provided a detailed diagnostic of the current operational landscape, highlighting gaps in passenger processing, security, and digital integration. Minister Sayoud commended the report for its clarity and analytical rigor, underlining its importance as a roadmap for the transformation.

The minister described the initiative as a “national strategic priority,” emphasizing the goal of transforming Algiers Airport into a state-of-the-art “smart airport.” This will involve deploying next-generation technologies, including intelligent surveillance systems, smart cameras, full-body scanners, facial recognition software, and a unified operations center capable of managing real-time airport logistics.

Security and data protection were also central themes of the meeting. Minister Sayoud praised the coordination between customs and security forces, stressing the dual imperative of strict regulatory compliance and fluid passenger flow. He underscored that enhanced safety must be balanced with the preservation of personal data integrity.

Concluding the session, Sayoud called for the immediate creation of a permanent inter-agency coordination committee. This task force—comprising representatives from customs, national security, data protection authorities, and technical services—will be charged with overseeing the rollout and ensuring the project’s compliance with all legal, technical, and operational requirements.

“This transformation will only succeed through synergy,” said the Minister, “The modernization of Algiers Airport is not merely a technological upgrade—it is a declaration of Algeria’s ambition to lead in regional aviation through intelligence, security, and operational excellence.”
