Millions Expected to Join the Three-Day Mega Event Celebrating Sports, Inclusion, and Community Spirit Under the Motto “Joy Unites Us”

Algiers, Algeria | April 30th, 2025 — Algiers is set to transform into a vibrant hub of athleticism and community celebration as the second edition of the “Capital of Sports” Festival kicks off this Thursday, May 1st, and runs through Saturday, May 3rd. Held under the theme “Joy Unites Us,” this dynamic event promises an immersive experience for Algerians of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities — with over 120 sporting and recreational activities scheduled across 14 carefully selected urban, natural, and aquatic locations throughout the capital.

Organized under the high patronage of Minister of Interior, Local Assemblies and Urban Development, Mr. Brahim Merad, the festival stands as a testament to Algeria’s growing investment in youth, inclusivity, and healthy living. It follows the resounding success of its inaugural edition, which featured only 70 activities across five sites. This year, the event has been significantly expanded, both in scale and scope, to meet public demand and broaden access.

From urban parks to coastal retreats and forest trails, the designated venues include the Sablettes, Bainem Forest, the Jardin d’Essai, Oued El Harrach, the Ben Aknoun Zoological Park, the Douéra dam, and the new town of Sidi Abdallah. Each location will offer free access to all visitors between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM for the full three-day duration.

In addition to 14 operational swimming pools, including newly inaugurated facilities, participants will also benefit from free shuttle transport between festival locations — a move aimed at easing accessibility and encouraging mass participation. The initiative also features special spaces for children, women, and people with disabilities, reinforcing the festival’s inclusive character and its mission to democratize sports practice across society.

According to Algiers’ Wilaya authorities, more than 1.5 million visitors are anticipated to take part in this year’s edition, reaffirming the festival’s place as a cornerstone event in the capital’s cultural and athletic calendar.

The program includes a rich and diverse range of sports and cultural activities, such as table tennis, beach volleyball, mile marathons, artistic gymnastics, combat sports, handball, basketball, volleyball, football, cycling, archery, chess, as well as barrier-jumping, live shows, children’s workshops, games, and multi-generational competitions. Several of these installations will be unveiled to the public for the first time during the festival, enhancing its novelty and attractiveness.

By promoting community engagement, fostering athletic talent, and energizing public spaces, the Capital of Sports festival underscores Algeria’s national vision for a healthier and more dynamic society — one that celebrates both its urban charm and natural wealth through the universal language of sport.
