Algiers International Fair Showcases National Industrial Innovation

The 56th edition of the Algiers International Fair (FIA), held at the Palais des Expositions SAFEX until June 28, has become a dynamic platform for Algeria’s local industrial producers to unveil the fruits of national innovation. In a context of economic recovery and diversification, the fair stands as a testament to the resilience and ambition of Algerian manufacturers, particularly in mechanical engineering, metallurgy, and plastics. In a striking example of homegrown industrial prowess, the national company El Bordi Machinery showcased its line of domestically manufactured forklifts—an achievement that impressed professional visitors. "We started as importers," said Ahmed Ibersiene, Director of Administration and Finance at El Bordi. "But given Algeria’s economic ambitions, we transitioned to local production. Today, we’ve reached an integration rate of 15 to 20%, and our goal is to hit 100%." Although key components such as engines are still imported, Ibersiene stressed that the company relies heavily on local subcontractors and its own team of continually trained engineers. "FIA is the ideal venue to strike innovation-driven partnerships with local suppliers and improve our quality-to-price ratio. Once the national market is saturated, we will expand into Africa," he confirmed. Another emblematic exhibitor, GAAR, specialized in manufacturing welded carbon steel tubes for locksmithing and agricultural use, is taking a proactive step towards industrial modernization. Manager Rabeh Laadjib emphasized the importance of leveraging Algeria’s academic and research institutions to upgrade the company's technology. “We’re responding to strong demand while maintaining high quality standards,” he said. “We plan to establish our own R&D department as we expand, to stay competitive and contribute meaningfully to the national development push.” Medit Plast, a company focused on producing high-quality plastic pallets for the pharmaceutical and agri-food sectors, is also placing research and sustainability at the heart of its industrial strategy. "Our R&D team is working tirelessly. We’ve already exported to France, which validates the reliability of our products,” a company representative shared. Yet, the firm remains frustrated by the ongoing use of wooden pallets—still available on the market despite a legal ban—due to their lower cost. “They’re harmful to health, non-durable, and should be replaced by our recyclable and repairable alternatives,” he added. Medit Plast is using FIA as a platform to educate buyers on the safety and environmental value of plastic pallets. This year’s FIA clearly illustrates that Algeria's industrial base is not only expanding but transforming—with local producers pursuing deeper integration, environmental responsibility, and cross-sectoral collaboration. Whether through mechanical innovation, steel processing, or sustainable packaging, national companies are stepping up to build an industry that is competitive both locally and globally.
