Algiers Launches Major Historic Building Rehabilitation Program

ALGIERS โ February 23, 2026 โย In a hands-on inspection tour, the Minister and Wali of Algiers, Mohamed Abdenour Rabehi, reviewed progress on the ambitious rehabilitation of historic buildings across several districts, including El Harrach, Hussein Dey, Mohamed Belouizdad, and Algiers Centre.
The initiative forms a core part of the wilayaโs โWhite Plan,โ aimed at preserving the cityโs architectural heritage, characterized by its diversity of styles yet increasingly vulnerable to decay over time. Works include addressing unauthorized rooftop and balcony extensions, clearing illegally occupied spaces, and enforcing legal measures to restore the integrity of historic structures.
The program is structured in two phases: the first targets buildings along major thoroughfares such as Didouche Mourad, Larbi Ben Mโhidi, Asselah Hocine, Zighoud Youcef, and Krim Belkacem streets. The second phase extends to popular neighborhoods and peripheral communes, covering Mohamed V, Hassiba Ben Bouali, Mohamed Belouizdad, Tripoli streets, and heritage sectors within the Casbah of Algiers, including Djebih Cherif, Rue de la Victoire, Louni Arezki, and Amar Ali streets. Additional areas include Rue Ali Khodja and Chemin Bougara in El Biar, as well as El Harrach Centre, with a gradual rollout planned across all wilaya communes.
Alongside building rehabilitation, urban improvements will focus on pedestrian areas, infrastructure upgrades, and the reorganization of commercial activity along major axes. A regulatory framework will standardize shop faรงades and operating hours to harmonize public spaces.
Minister Rabehi called for accelerated but precise execution, emphasizing high-quality standards. He praised workers and stakeholders for their efforts, acknowledging the technical complexity inherent to restoring historic structures. Residents have largely welcomed the initiative, expressing understanding of the temporary disruptions caused by the works, and lauding the program as a decisive step in preserving Algiersโ cultural and architectural heritage.
