Algiers Mobilizes Emergency Teams and Opens El Harrach Slaughterhouse to Handle 1,000 Sheep and 200 Cattle for Eid al-Adha

With capacity to handle over 1,000 sheep and 200 cattle, the capital prepares extensive logistical, veterinary, and sanitary services to support citizens in performing the Eid ritual.

Algiers, Algeria | June 5th, 2025 —  As the city of Algiers braces for the high turnout of Eid al-Adha festivities, local authorities have mobilized substantial resources to ensure a smooth and dignified observance of the sacrificial ritual. At the forefront of this effort is the El Harrach slaughterhouse, which is fully prepared to welcome citizens and accommodate the slaughter of more than 1,000 sheep and 200 cattle on the day of Eid.

This initiative, in line with directives from the Wali of Algiers, aims to provide a clean, safe, and accessible space for families—especially those living in tight quarters or lacking proper facilities—to perform the ritual in accordance with Islamic tradition. The operation is supervised by the Algiers Municipal Corporation for the Management of Slaughterhouses, Fish Markets, and Wholesale Produce Markets.

Rida Atab, Director General of the entity, confirmed during a detailed briefing on Eid preparations that the slaughterhouse will open its doors to the public starting at 6:00 a.m. to begin receiving sacrificial animals. Citizens will have access to trained butchers, veterinary inspectors, meat-cutting services, and a secure refrigerated storage facility with a capacity of 270 cubic meters, all certified for compliance with health regulations.

Additionally, five refrigeration units will be available for citizens wishing to retrieve their meat the day after Eid. To enhance hygiene and efficiency, the waste—specifically the animal hides—will be collected by the public sanitation company NATCOM.

Security and logistics have also been meticulously arranged. Between 50 to 70 security agents will be deployed to safeguard operations, and a specially designated parking lot with space for 500 vehicles will be available. “Our mission is to maintain high standards of hygiene, operational efficiency, and citizen satisfaction throughout this sacred celebration,” Atab emphasized.

Meanwhile, the Algiers Directorate of Agriculture is executing its own emergency plan. More than 80 veterinarians have been deployed across all municipalities, with special mobile units ready to respond to urgent slaughter-related incidents.

According to Mehdi Messaoui, Director of Agriculture for the Wilaya of Algiers, over 100 sheep market points across the capital are under constant veterinary surveillance to ensure public health and livestock safety. An additional 15 veterinarians are stationed at slaughterhouses across the wilaya, complemented by veterinary on-call teams at district branches and the Directorate’s headquarters.
