Algiers Port Records Over 42% Surge in Exports: Economist Highlights Three Key Drivers

Algiers – September 2025 – The Port of Algiers has experienced a remarkable rebound in its commercial activity during the second quarter of 2025, with exports soaring by more than 42% compared to the same period last year. This performance, largely driven by non-hydrocarbon shipments, signals a structural shift in Algeria’s trade dynamics and a tangible return on the country’s economic diversification agenda.
According to the latest figures released by the Port Authority, export volumes climbed from 307,823 tonnes between March and June 2024 to 438,668 tonnes during the same months in 2025, marking a 42.51% increase. Containerized goods also witnessed a robust growth of 31.69%. On the import side, unloaded cargo volumes rose by nearly 16%, reaching 1.976 million tonnes – a surge attributed primarily to large-scale livestock imports for Eid al-Adha.
Overall, total cargo throughput at the port rose to 2.414 million tonnes in Q2 2025, compared with 2.011 million tonnes last year, reflecting a 20% growth. Passenger traffic also registered a striking increase of around 40%, rising from 56,737 travelers in 2024 to 79,356 this year, driven by the competitive pricing of new maritime operators.
Operationally, Algiers Port succeeded in cutting average vessel docking times from 4.49 days in 2024 to 3.44 days in 2025 – a reduction of more than a full day – underscoring improvements in logistical efficiency and port management. The authority credited these advances to the introduction of continuous 24/7 operations since February 2025, in line with directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Three Drivers Behind the Growth
In his analysis for Algeria Now, economist Salim Ouchen pointed to three primary factors behind this surge.
First, he underscored economic diversification: “The 42% leap in exports reflects the success of Algeria’s policy of diversifying its economy. These indicators confirm that the country is gradually breaking away from its dependency on hydrocarbons, encouraging domestic enterprises to export and broadening the base of products destined for international markets.”
Second, he emphasized port reforms and logistics modernization: “These results are the direct fruit of reforms in the port sector – from adopting 24/7 operations to upgrading infrastructure and management systems. Reducing vessel docking times from 4.5 to 3.4 days is a concrete indicator of enhanced performance and a boost to Algeria’s attractiveness as a regional logistics hub.”
Finally, he pointed to Algeria’s growing role in regional trade: “This surge consolidates Algeria’s position as a pivotal commercial hub in the Mediterranean and Africa. The rise in both cargo and passenger flows highlights the country’s expanding role in regional exchange networks, perfectly aligned with Algeria’s strategy of African economic integration and developing non-hydrocarbon exports.”
With these results, the Port of Algiers is no longer just a national gateway but increasingly a symbol of Algeria’s economic repositioning – bridging domestic reform with regional ambition, and underscoring the nation’s emergence as a key player in Mediterranean and African trade routes.
