Algiers Port Unveils Major Expansion: Three Strategic Quays Reopened After a Decade

Transport Minister Said Sayoud Hails Milestone in Algeria’s Maritime Sovereignty and Trade Modernization as Fourth Quay Nears Completion

Algiers, Algeria | July 5th, 2025 — In a development coinciding with Algeria’s 63rd Independence Day, the Port of Algiers marked a turning point in its logistical and economic capacity with the official reopening of three major quays. The inauguration was presided over by Minister of Transport, Mr. Said Sayoud, who emphasized the strategic importance of the long-awaited project as a cornerstone of Algeria’s maritime modernization and national economic revival.

The renovation and extension of the three quays—idle for nearly ten years—were executed entirely by Algerian expertise, with no foreign assistance. The infrastructure now spans 880 meters of modernized berthing space and introduces 70,000 square meters of additional operational area. This development is set to drastically enhance cargo flow, optimize ship handling, and eliminate port congestion.

A Maritime Transformation

The upgraded quays will allow the Port of Algiers to process over 6,000 containers at any given time, according to port authorities. Annual handling capacity is expected to jump by an estimated 300 vessels and 150,000 containers, firmly positioning the port as a regional hub for North African maritime trade.

A fourth quay—also undergoing final touch-ups—will be operational by the end of the month, completing a multi-phase modernization program designed to revitalize Algeria’s oldest commercial port.
