Allies of Pedro Sánchez Demand Ceasefire on Arms Sales to Morocco

ALGIERS- Pedro Sánchez’s approach to Morocco is beginning to create divisions within the Spanish government, composed of left-wing parties, such as Sumar. Led by Yolanda Díaz, Sumar is now calling for the government to halt all arms sales to Rabat. However, the government has not yet taken up this demand, citing its agreements with Mohammed VI as compliant with both national and international norms.

Several parliamentarians from Yolanda Díaz’s party have questioned the Executive on issues related to Morocco and Western Sahara, after Pedro Sánchez’s government admitted Mohammed VI’s sovereignty plan over this region.

In particular, Sumar asks the government whether it will “suspend” the export of weapons to the Kingdom of Morocco “in a context of internal repression and serious violations of international human rights law or international humanitarian law in the occupied territories,” referring to Western Sahara.

The tensions within the Spanish government reflect the broader debate over Spain’s relationship with Morocco and its policies regarding arms sales. The call from Sumar highlights concerns over human rights abuses and international law violations in both Morocco and the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
