Ambassador Dong Guangli: “China and Algeria Have Written the Glorious Chapters of Liberation with Their Blood and Lives”

Algiers – September 2025 – In a solemn and evocative ceremony held on Wednesday evening at the Embassy of China in Algiers, the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and of the World Anti-Fascist War was commemorated. The event, attended by Algerian officials and figures from the political, military, and civil spheres, became more than an act of remembrance; it was a reaffirmation of the indissoluble bond between Algeria and China, two nations forged by sacrifice and united through the spirit of resistance.
In his keynote address, Chinese Ambassador Dong Guangli retraced the magnitude of China’s struggle. He recalled that the Chinese people waged “a heroic resistance lasting 14 years and encompassing more than 200,000 battles,” at the cost of staggering human and material sacrifices. Over 35 million Chinese lives were lost or maimed, while the nation endured economic devastation exceeding $600 billion. This, he stressed, was not merely a national tragedy but a contribution of historic proportions to humanity’s liberation: by tying down large Japanese forces, China opened the Eastern Front of the global anti-fascist war, thus providing critical support to battles in Europe, the Pacific, and beyond.
Ambassador Dong drew a powerful parallel between the ordeals endured by China and Algeria, both having endured colonization, oppression, and violence before rising in epic struggles for liberation. “China and Algeria have written the glorious chapters of national liberation with their blood and their lives,” he said. For him, the duty to revisit history lies not in perpetuating rancor but in drawing light for the present and the future.
Central to his speech was the call for intergenerational continuity of revolutionary values. “By continuing to tell the stories of the revolution and of heroes, both nations must strengthen exchanges among their youth so that the great revolutionary spirit may be transmitted from one generation to the next,” he affirmed.
Dong Guangli emphasized that the historical brotherhood between Algeria and China is not mere rhetoric but a living reality, nourished by shared sacrifices and strengthened by enduring cooperation. He cited, as a poignant example, the visit earlier this year of Algerian Air Force veterans trained in China over six decades ago—a journey that he described not simply as a retracing of the past but as “an inspiration for the future.”
Looking toward contemporary dynamics, the ambassador reaffirmed the resilience of Sino-Algerian relations. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, the two countries have consistently offered each other unwavering support, channeling the revolutionary spirit into pragmatic cooperation and joint development. He stressed the necessity of marching together in major global initiatives: “Both sides must jointly implement the Initiatives for Global Development, Global Security, Global Civilization, and Global Governance, while working hand in hand for the high-quality advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative.”
Concluding with a message of hope and conviction, Ambassador Dong expressed his fervent wish: “May Sino-Algerian friendship remain forever strong and prosperous, may peace prevail across the world, and may happiness be with all peoples.”
