Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival 2025 Responds to False Allegations by Egyptian Director Marwa El Sharkawy

Algiers – September 2025 – The Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival 2025 has formally addressed misleading claims circulated on social media by Egyptian director Marwa El Sharkawy, which attempted to tarnish both the festival’s reputation and Algeria’s image. The festival clarified that the official invitation sent to El Sharkawy, as documented in her own emails, clearly stipulated her participation from September 27, with the screening of her film scheduled for September 28, 2025.
Despite this, El Sharkawy unilaterally requested extensions to her travel and accommodation dates, acknowledging in her email dated August 11, 2025, that the official invitation covered only September 27–30 and that she would bear the cost of her additional stay personally. She further attempted to extend her visit until October 5, outside the festival’s commitments. Moreover, she pressured Air Algérie staff for a seat via an open ticket without consulting festival management, causing administrative disruptions entirely beyond the festival’s responsibility.
Upon arrival in Algeria, the director failed to report to the festival administration as required, breaching agreed protocols and making baseless claims. While the festival reaffirms its deep respect for all independent and emerging filmmakers, it categorically rejects any attempts to misrepresent Algeria or its esteemed guests through false narratives.
As a result, the Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival officially announces the complete and permanent withdrawal of Marwa El Sharkawy’s film from the fifth edition’s program and reserves the right to pursue legal action against any deliberate attempts to damage its reputation or question its integrity. The festival remains a premier cultural and artistic platform in the Mediterranean, committed to mutual respect and welcoming guests worldwide in an environment reflecting Algeria’s noble values and hospitality.
