ANOCA Engages IOC in Lausanne Talks to Advance African Games within Olympic Framework
By Dr. Hana Saada
The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) took part in a high-level meeting held on March 30, 2026, at the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland, bringing together continental sports leaders and senior representatives of the global Olympic movement.
The meeting was chaired by IOC President Kirsty Coventry, with the participation of presidents of continental associations and vice-presidents of the Association of National Olympic Committees, providing a platform to examine coordination mechanisms within the Olympic system.
Africa was represented by Mustapha Berraf, President of ANOCA, who presented the continent’s approach to strengthening the position of the African Games within the international Olympic structure. The discussions addressed the possibility of aligning the African Games more closely with Olympic pathways, including their consideration as a qualifying stage for the upcoming Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
In this context, participants agreed on the establishment of a joint working group tasked with coordinating with international federations. The objective is to facilitate the participation of leading African athletes in continental competitions and to improve competitive standards in line with the development observed across African sport.
The meeting also examined issues related to athlete protection, with particular attention to women athletes. New measures were adopted by consensus, reflecting ongoing efforts within the Olympic movement to address governance and regulatory aspects in this area.
During the discussions, Berraf highlighted the need to clarify certain regulatory elements linked to these measures, with a view to ensuring consistency with principles of fairness, equal opportunity, and respect for biological considerations within the framework of existing rules.
ANOCA reaffirmed its commitment to continued cooperation with the IOC and other stakeholders to support the development of sport across the African continent and to strengthen its presence in international and Olympic competitions.
