ANP Foils Major Narcotics and Terrorist Support Operations: Securing Algeria’s Borders and National Stability

ALGIERS, March 4th, 2026 — In a decisive demonstration of operational prowess, the People’s National Army (ANP) has successfully thwarted multiple attempts to smuggle 5 quintals and 22 kilograms of processed cannabis (kif) across Algeria’s borders with Morocco, simultaneously dismantling significant narcotics networks. These operations, executed in close coordination with national security services across various military regions, resulted in the arrest of 37 drug traffickers and the seizure of 1,174,080 psychotropic tablets, according to the ANP’s official operational report released Wednesday.
The Army’s commitment to counterterrorism was equally evident. In the 1st Military Region, Ain Defla, ANP detachments neutralized two armed terrorists and recovered two Kalashnikov submachine guns along with ammunition. Concurrently, eight additional individuals providing logistical and operational support to terrorist groups were apprehended in coordinated operations nationwide, reflecting the Army’s strategic integration of counter-narcotics and counterterrorism efforts.
Operations extended to southern military zones—including Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Salah, and In Guezzam—where 325 suspects were detained. Security forces confiscated 42 vehicles, 229 power generators, 138 jackhammers, four metal detectors, and substantial quantities of raw gold and stones, alongside specialized equipment used in illicit mining activities. Additional interventions led to the seizure of one submachine gun, one automatic pistol, five hunting rifles, 39,710 liters of fuel, 22 quintals of tobacco, and 21 tons of foodstuffs intended for smuggling. These meticulously planned operations underscore the ANP’s capacity to disrupt criminal supply chains at multiple levels.
On Algeria’s maritime front, the Coast Guard successfully foiled attempts at illegal migration, rescuing 108 individuals aboard handcrafted vessels. An additional 81 undocumented migrants of various nationalities were apprehended across the national territory, further reinforcing the ANP’s commitment to safeguarding Algeria’s borders and maritime sovereignty.
Through these sustained and multi-pronged operations, the ANP has sent an unequivocal message: Algeria will not tolerate threats to its national security, be they in the form of drug trafficking, illicit mining, terrorist activity, or illegal migration.
