Arabic in the Media: A Message, an Identity, and a Responsibility

✍️ By Dr. Mohamed Meziane, Minister of Communication

Algiers, Algeria– Monday, July 21, 2025 | From both a historical and contemporary perspective, the Arabic language has long served as a civilizational pillar of the Arab world—a bridge for understanding, a vessel of culture, and a symbol of identity and sovereignty.

Today, however, amid the sweeping tides of globalization, linguistic alienation, and the dominance of multilingual digital media, the urgency to restore and revitalize the status of Arabic within Arab media institutions is more critical than ever. Arabic must not be viewed merely as a tool for communication, but rather as a repository of meaning, a reflection of collective consciousness, and a reservoir of cultural memory.

In this spirit, the Ministry of Communication—under whose patronage the Arab Forum on the Role of Arabic in the Media is organized—affirms its belief in the powerful role of communication in consolidating linguistic identity and transmitting the richness of Arabic discourse to future generations. We are convinced that defending Arabic is not a matter of empty slogans, but of producing dignified, purposeful, and impactful media content.

Today, Algeria proudly hosts the First Arab Forum on the Role of Arabic in the Media, under the theme: “Arabic in the Media: Reality and Prospects.” This landmark initiative was launched by the Al-Kalima Association for Culture and Media, in cooperation with the Ministry of Communication, and brings together a distinguished group of Arab media professionals, scholars, and intellectuals who have answered the call to participate in this culturally and intellectually significant event.

In this context, it must be emphasized that one of the professional duties of media practitioners is to actively promote the presence and quality of the Arabic language across all forms of media, ensuring its sustainability and enhancing its performance in content production across platforms.

Discussing the status of Arabic in communication spaces also necessarily involves addressing a crucial matter: media ethics. This issue is expected to be thoroughly examined during the forum, especially in light of alarming trends within contemporary media—such as the spread of disinformation, sensationalist discourse, and rhetoric that sows division and undermines national unity.

The forum will also be an opportunity to advance the notion of purpose-driven media—a media landscape that reinforces national sovereignty and aligns with the aspirations of Arab populations.

Despite Arabic’s widely acknowledged richness in vocabulary and grammatical elegance—even among non-native speakers—it is regrettable that its usage in media is often marred by stylistic vulgarity and a lack of linguistic mastery. As the Arab thinker once said, “There can be no good article in a poor-quality newspaper,” we might add: there can be no truly good article laden with linguistic errors.

This compels us to address the urgent need for mechanisms that preserve the integrity and excellence of a language renowned for its eloquence and sophistication. Continuous professional training for media practitioners must now be regarded not as a luxury, but as an essential pillar—particularly as journalism tools evolve alongside artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in the digital media space.

It is equally important to note that the vitality of a language today is no longer measured by the number of its speakers alone, but by its actual usage in digital ecosystems and across social media platforms.

Arabic, in this regard, does not begin from a void—it already exists in these domains. What remains is to solidify and expand this presence through the creation of high-quality, meaningful digital content, enabling Arab media to assertively counter the epistemological and cultural assault it is facing in an age of information warfare.

This forum comes at a time when the Arab world increasingly needs to build a unified media front—one capable of countering disinformation campaigns and systematic distortions targeting Arab societies. It is expected that the forum will contribute to establishing a concrete vision for synergizing public and private media efforts in this endeavor.

Moreover, the forum seeks to assess the current state of Arab media performance and to propose effective mechanisms for its development and increased impact.

As such, this event offers a vital platform to promote coordination among Arab radio and television broadcasters through the exchange of programs and expertise, and the creation of joint media projects that uphold the values of dialogue, integration, and sustainable development. It is expected to open promising horizons for enhanced Arab media cooperation in the digital age.

In conclusion, this forum is not merely symbolic—it is strategic. It aspires to reposition Arabic at the heart of the media landscape and to crystallize a unified vision that supports professional, value-driven journalism rooted in identity and cultural authenticity. It is a timely opportunity to launch a collective Arab media project worthy of our language, and responsive to the challenges of the present and the demands of the future.
