Arkab, OAPEC Secretary-General Discuss Arab Energy Future: Algeria Backs Deepened Cooperation in Hydrogen, Lithium, and Renewables

In a meeting held in Algiers, Algeria reaffirmed its unwavering support for Arab energy unity and innovation, highlighting a new vision anchored in battery production, hydrogen development, and cross-border technology transfer.

Algiers, Algeria | June 26th, 2025 —  In a high-level meeting that underscores Algeria’s growing influence on the Arab energy landscape, Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, received Jamal Issa Al-Loughani, Secretary-General of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC), at the ministry’s headquarters in Algiers.

The talks focused on advancing bilateral cooperation and joint strategies across hydrocarbons, renewables, and cutting-edge sectors such as hydrogen development and energy storage, with particular emphasis on regional energy security and innovation.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy, the two parties exchanged perspectives on deepening OAPEC’s coordination and maximizing collaboration among its member states. Arkab reiterated Algeria’s unfaltering commitment to pan-Arab energy unity, stressing the importance of consolidating positions at international energy fora and intensifying investment in human capital through targeted training programs, expert exchanges, and technology transfers.

“It is imperative to invest in Arab expertise and talent to meet today’s energy challenges and secure a sustainable future for our nations,” Arkab declared, emphasizing the need to strengthen technical cooperation and launch concrete projects with shared added value.

Of particular note was Algeria’s growing leadership in battery production and energy storage, as Arkab detailed the country’s ambitious project for producing Lithium-Fer-Phosphate (LFP) batteries, a milestone in Algeria’s transition toward a diversified, future-facing energy economy. He highlighted this initiative as a strategic pillar in building a clean, technologically integrated, and self-reliant Arab energy ecosystem.

Arkab also paid tribute to Professor Karim Zaghib, a globally renowned Algerian-Canadian expert in lithium battery innovation, underscoring the crucial role that Arab scientists and innovators can play in driving the region’s green industrialization.

He called for capitalizing on Algerian scientific expertise as part of a broader vision to create pan-Arab research and development clusters, especially in energy storage, lithium valorization, and hydrogen economy development.

The OAPEC Secretary-General, Mr. Al-Loughani, welcomed Algeria’s commitment and affirmed the organization’s readiness to deepen partnerships in strategic sectors and align energy policies to support sustainable growth, innovation, and regional resilience in the face of global energy transitions.
