At Algeria’s Request: UN Security Council Convenes Emergency Session on Gaza

Algiers, Algeria | The United Nations Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting to address the latest escalation in Gaza, following the Zionist entity’s decision to reoccupy the city—an act widely denounced as a flagrant violation of international law.

The initiative, spearheaded by Algeria and backed by the European members of the Council, seeks to fast-track deliberations on the matter. Diplomatic consultations are currently underway to finalise the date of the session, with Algeria insisting that it be held at the earliest possible opportunity in light of the rapidly worsening situation on the ground.

Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Riyad Mansour, confirmed that the session could take place as soon as Friday or Saturday. He warned that the Zionist entity’s decision not only contravenes the principles of international law but also poses a grave threat to any prospect for peace in the region.

“The international community must act decisively and without delay,” Mansour urged, revealing that a formal letter would be sent to the Security Council to remind it of its obligations to intervene. He further disclosed that Arab and Islamic nations are collaborating on a draft resolution aimed at halting the Zionists’ planned large-scale military expansion in Gaza.

According to Mansour, the resolution will demand an immediate cessation of hostilities, the prevention of further incursions, and the creation of conditions conducive to a just and lasting peace. The urgency, he stressed, stems from the risk of a humanitarian catastrophe should the Zionist entity proceed with its operations.

Algeria’s diplomatic move underscores its longstanding commitment to the Palestinian cause and its readiness to leverage multilateral platforms to confront actions that undermine regional stability and international legal norms.
