At the United Nations, Minister Saihi Reaffirms Algeria’s Absolute Commitment to Citizen Welfare and Health Reform

Algiers – September 2025 – From the floor of the United Nations in New York, Algeria’s Minister of Labour, Employment, and Social Security, Abdelhak Saihi, delivered a resolute message: the Algerian state considers the welfare of its citizens an absolute national priority, enshrined as a fundamental right within the Constitution. Speaking during the high-level meeting on prevention and the reinforcement of health and psychological security, held on the margins of the 80th UN General Assembly, Saihi stressed that Algeria’s social model rests firmly on universal access to healthcare, free of charge, and on the progressive expansion of comprehensive health coverage.
Underscoring Algeria’s determination to modernize its health system, the minister highlighted structural reforms aimed at upgrading facilities, integrating digital technologies, and expanding specialized care. He pointed to the National Multisectoral Strategic Plan (2022–2030) for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, which builds on the 2015–2019 framework. The plan includes 11 strategic goals, 30 programs, and 113 concrete procedures, with implementation across schools, healthcare facilities, and workplaces, while paying particular attention to vulnerable populations and public health challenges such as obesity.
Saihi further emphasized the importance of integrating psychological health into public policies, broadening access to specialized services, and improving working conditions for healthcare professionals. These initiatives, he noted, reflect Algeria’s ambition to align its healthcare system with international standards while ensuring its citizens benefit from equitable, modern, and high-quality services.
On the economic front, Algeria continues to strengthen its domestic pharmaceutical industry, which already meets 80 percent of national demand. This achievement positions Algeria as a crucial supplier for Africa, ensuring access to effective medicines and reinforcing continental health security.
Concluding his address, the minister called for fair and balanced international partnerships, rooted in technology transfer, knowledge sharing, and capacity building for African nations. Rejecting conditional arrangements that undermine equity, Saihi urged the global community to embrace solidarity in constructing a just, sustainable, and secure future for all.
