Attaf Holds High-Level Diplomatic Talks to Reinforce Algeria’s African Leadership and Advance the Sahrawi Cause

Algiers – December 2025 –In a display of diplomatic dynamism, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, held an intensive series of high-level meetings on Monday at the International Conference Center (CIC), engaging with senior African and international officials in discussions that underscored Algeria’s strategic commitment to peace, security, and decolonization across the continent.
Attaf received Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, in a meeting characterized by a frank exchange of views on recent developments in the Western Sahara dispute. Both sides examined the evolving regional context and, more pointedly, the political and diplomatic avenues capable of restoring the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, deliberations centered on the implementation of relevant United Nations resolutions, including Security Council Resolution 9727, recently adopted and widely regarded as a diplomatic milestone reinforcing the legal framework surrounding the conflict.
In parallel, Attaf held talks with his Belarusian counterpart, Maxim Ryzhenkov, in a session that reaffirmed the interest of both nations in expanding bilateral cooperation and deepening political dialogue. The discussions offered an occasion to review the current state of bilateral relations, identify priority areas, and finalize preparations for the upcoming bilateral engagements expected to inject renewed momentum into diplomatic, economic, and strategic exchanges between Algiers and Minsk.
On the sidelines of the 12th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, also known as the “Oran Process,” Attaf welcomed the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf. Discussions focused on the fragile security landscape on the African continent, where political upheaval and multifaceted conflicts have been exacerbated by the volatility of the international system. The meeting highlighted the complex nature of current threats in the Sahelo-Saharan belt and revisited the African Union’s responsibilities in managing continental crises, with particular attention to the ongoing challenge posed by the unresolved question of Western Sahara.
Echoing the strategic orientation of Algeria’s foreign policy, Attaf also conferred with Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security. The two officials explored pragmatic mechanisms to bolster the institutional capacity of the African Union in the face of escalating security threats, instability, and structural governance challenges. The Algerian minister conveyed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to initiatives aimed at formulating and operationalizing “African solutions to African problems,” reiterating Algeria’s longstanding advocacy for endogenous approaches that elevate African agency in conflict resolution.
Commissioner Adeoye, for his part, lauded Algeria’s proactive role at the United Nations Security Council in promoting African priorities and defending the continent’s collective interests. He further acknowledged Algeria’s substantial contributions to the consolidation of a unified African diplomatic front, praising its leadership in shaping the continental agenda on peace, security, and institutional reform.
