Algiers – September 2025 – Algeria’s Minister of State, Ahmed Attaf, delivered a forceful assessment of the recently concluded Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025), positioning the Algiers edition not as a matter of fortune or circumstance but as the product of a deliberate strategic decision. Speaking at a press briefing in the aftermath of the event, Attaf underscored that the hosting of IATF 2025 was “a calculated choice, anchored in President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision,” intended to cement Algeria’s role at the heart of Africa’s economic transformation.

Attaf was categorical in dismissing any suggestion that Algeria’s hosting of the IATF was coincidental. “The decision to host IATF 2025 was not by chance; it was carefully considered,” he declared, framing the event as an extension of presidential strategy. For Attaf, the fair was not merely a ceremonial occasion or a display of diplomatic hospitality — it was a strategic instrument designed to transform Algeria’s diplomatic capital into tangible economic leverage.
Headline Numbers: A Monumental Economic Harvest
The minister highlighted the enormous economic outcomes of the event, declaring that “the figures speak louder than speeches.” The Algiers edition generated an unprecedented USD 48.3 billion in commercial deals and investment pledges. Crucially, Algerian companies secured USD 11.4 billion in direct agreements, while a further USD 11.6 billion remains under negotiation and close to finalization.
These outcomes, Attaf stressed, are not abstract promises but a continental endorsement of Algeria’s credibility as an investment hub. “The Algiers edition was recognized by African institutions, participating countries, and private-sector actors as a success,” he said, but he issued a cautionary note: the true measure of success will depend on the conversion of memoranda of understanding into signed contracts, and the transformation of signed contracts into functioning factories, infrastructure, and jobs.
The Algeria–Italy Axis: Dynamic and Tangible
A significant portion of Attaf’s intervention focused on Algeria’s bilateral partnership with Italy, which he described as “excellent, dynamic, and project-driven.” He pointed to Italy’s expanded natural gas imports from Algeria, joint ventures in renewable energy, cooperation in green hydrogen development, and ongoing projects in fiber-optic infrastructure.
For Attaf, this partnership exemplifies Algeria’s model of pragmatic, mutually beneficial cooperation: combining European capital and technology with Algerian energy and strategic positioning to generate projects that benefit both sides. He positioned this axis as a template for Algeria’s broader engagement across Africa.
IATF as a Strategic Tool for African Renaissance
Beyond the deals and the bilateral success stories, Attaf emphasized the strategic role of IATF in reshaping Africa’s development trajectory. He reiterated Algeria’s conviction that economic development is the true foundation of security and stability.
“The IATF in Algiers went beyond an economic exhibition,” he insisted. “It was a continental milestone to reassert African economic integration, to strengthen sovereignty, and to reaffirm Africa’s right to take its place at the center of global governance.” Attaf framed the event as part of a larger Algerian agenda: to use diplomacy and trade as tools for continental emancipation and empowerment, ensuring that Africa is no longer treated as a marginal player in global decision-making.
A Categorical Denial of Malian ICJ Complaint
The minister also addressed a sensitive diplomatic issue that had circulated in recent weeks — rumors that Mali had filed a complaint against Algeria at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Attaf categorically denied these reports, asserting that Algeria had received no notification from The Hague and emphasizing that any such complaint would have been formally transmitted.
“These are baseless rumors designed to distract from the real agenda of development and integration,” he said, calling on the press to verify such claims directly with the Court rather than reproduce unverified speculation.
