Attaf, Lavrov Coordinate on UN Security Council Agenda, Emphasizing the Western Sahara Question

Algiers – October 2025 – In a renewed demonstration of the strategic depth and diplomatic coordination that characterize Algerian-Russian relations, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, held a telephone conversation this evening with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
The discussion comes within the framework of regular consultations between the two ministers on international and regional developments of shared interest, reflecting the long-standing partnership and mutual trust that unite Algeria and Russia. Both nations continue to uphold a relationship founded on reciprocal respect, strategic convergence, and consistent coordination across multilateral platforms.
During the call, the two diplomats exchanged views on the key items on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council, which Russia currently presides over. Particular focus was given to the question of Western Sahara, a decolonization issue that remains among the most significant and sensitive matters before the Council. A new UN resolution on the matter is expected before the end of the month, a development both ministers examined in light of their countries’ shared commitment to the principles of international legality and self-determination.
The two ministers reiterated their common vision regarding the need to preserve the primacy of international law and ensure that all pending disputes are settled through peaceful and negotiated solutions, in line with the Charter of the United Nations and the aspirations of the peoples concerned.
In closing, Ministers Attaf and Lavrov reaffirmed the determination of Algeria and Russia to maintain and deepen their close coordination within international forums, particularly the United Nations, in defense of justice, sovereignty, and multilateral diplomacy. They also underscored their mutual resolve to consolidate the strategic partnership that binds the two friendly nations—one built upon historical solidarity, shared principles, and a joint commitment to a balanced and lawful international order.
